Permalink Carl Wilson's Sound

Wasn't Carl the golden throat as well? I heard he did a lot of the vocals.

Carl's voice is truly beautiful. Any of the tracks where he does lead on stand out. He also has a very good solo album where you can hear his voice.

slightly Off topic, sorry.
But there is a Beach Boys tribute band ( The Beach Toys) here in So. Cal. but they tour all over the world. They do a real good job of capturing the 60's 5 piece band sound of the Beach Boys live.

The guy that plays the Carl Wilson part had John Benton of the Lively Ones, help him pick out and set up his guitar. (Jap Jag) into a Bandmaster. I think he had a tank but not sure. have to ask John.

It sounded really good for the Beach boys vocal and instros.
But one time they asked John to get up and join them on Miserlou.

He did a pretty good job, on it but it wasn't quite right.
when he came back out into the crowd, he said it wasn't set up right for (Really) playing instro surf the way WE like it.
too thin of strings, not enough reverb. etc. etc.

while carl was a good singer, it was brian who did all of the falsetto work until he left, and then left that to carl. i believe carl even played piano after brian left, too. but other than that, they all did the vocals, even live(except dennis, he was too busy being crazy).

someone said "shut down" was an istro? i beg to differ. or maybe you were saying it could be turned into a good instro, in which case i agree!

if your looking for the best of the beach boys, then get "greatest car songs", that has all of thier "hot rod" stuff, the stuff that wasnt so cheesy as their filler songs.

Shut Down Part 2 is an instrumental. It's a different song than "Tach it up, tach it up, buddy gonna shut you down..."

I'm pretty sure "Shut Down, Part 2" was on the album "Shut Down Volume 2" ('64 or '65?). Strange title difference, but check it out... funny count in... it's a happy, cool tune.

I think Shut Down Volume 2 is my favorite Beach Boys cover artwork.

Back to Don't Worry Baby and the personnel-here's what I found:

"Despite claims to the contrary over the years, "Don't Worry Baby" apparently was recorded with the Beach Boys -- not studio musicians -- playing the instruments. According to Brian, the song was recorded in two eight hour sessions at Western. The basic track features Dennis on drums, Carl on guitar and himself on piano. Brian then overdubbed the electric bass and Carl added the lead guitar."

Do You Remember? A Chronology of the Beach Boys, 1964-65 by Brad Elliot, featured in Dumb Angel No. 4 All Summer Long.

Hey Ted,
I don't have the book in front of me, but if I remember right in Earl Palmer's Biography "Backbeat" he listed "Don't Worry Baby" as a song he played drums on. I'll double check tomorrow (the book's at my office).
So do we believe Brian or Mr. Palmer? Looks like we have a serious dilemma here! haha

Hmm. Earl's more aged brain versus Brian's damaged one? I haven't had time to look in my Beach Boys book with all the sessions in it, but the tracking sheet will tell the truth...However, if it is Mr. Palmer, he does a good job of mimicking Dennis's style as opposed to some other songs where it is so obviously not Dennis.
There's also the chance that Earl Palmer played on demo/practice versions leading up to the recording, and not being there for the actual session and mix, assumed it was he on the track heard on the record.
I'll get back to my homework, I promise.

Whoops... Embarassed
The aged Earl Palmer takes credit in his book for playing on "Please Let Me Wonder," NOT "Don't Worry Baby."

I remembered wrong... I'm getting aged I suppose. Sad

You're not alone, Steve, you're not alone. Smile Besides, I also think I saw Hal Blaine take credit for it to in his book. The session guys did so many sessions and the band was on a whirlwind of fame and fortune at the time, its hard to tell (the tracking list is the only way, but even they are confusing). The thing that strikes me about the Beach Boys day-by-day book is how hard they all worked, between touring and recording. Insane. They didn't just stay home like those wimpy Beatles;) and the one that did stay home did more than the four of them combined.

yeah, the beatles suck. i've always hated them. the beach boys were something i listened to very intently when i was a young lad.

i hate when people tell you that "i wanna hold your hand" was a rebellious song for that time. well screw that. the name "rock n roll" is from a song referring it to sex, so therefore, holding hands isnt quite as rebellious as sex. sure, the beach boys were like little boys, and they were corny, but at least they werent trying to be something they werent like the beatles trying to be rebellious.

sorry if i offended any beatles fans.

Man, sometimes I hate the internet. There was a WINK following my comment that started this, because we've all been through this Beatle battle before (BORING) and I was simply alluding to that.
