I think MOAM? was the first surf style band to successfully marry the traditional sound with the energy and live show experience of punk rock. That's why I agree that they are an important milemarker in the history of surf. I can definitely see a similarity between them and bands like The Ghastly Ones, who although they don't share a ton of similarities sonically, are also influenced by the old Ventures kinda stuff as well as The Misfits and other punk bands myself and many others of this generation of surf grew up with. MOAM? was a huge gateway into this genre for me... Surf is the "coolest" music of all time when done right and if it weren't for MOAM? and Tarantino in the 90's a whole buttload of people would still think surf is boring "dad" music that old dudes in Hawaiian shirts and flip flops play.

MoAM? not having much influence on the long running SoCal surf scene is not a surprise. L.A. is it's own self-contained world. (I don't mean that as a backhanded comment from a NorCal'er, but SoCal produces its own everything from scratch.) Punk's influence is right there in it's own back and front yard, beginning in the late-70's, so surf/punk cross contamination was bound to happen. Energetically MoAm? came across as punk-y, but Starcrunch's technique's sometimes went beyond just slashing notes and chomping away on barre chords. Punk-wise, I hear more East Bay Ray, than The Misfits, but them coming to fruition in the early-90's, collegiate rock era could make it likely that perhaps maybe there was some Sonic Youth/Thurston Moore influence on him. Using the guitar as a noise maker, as well as an instrument.

The way that The Chantay's nailed the surf/surfing-experience sound with Pipline, I really think that MoAm? accomplished a similar feat by mastering the Sci-Fi/science-experiment sound with, Inside the Atom.

Twisted Evil > Angel

I just think they're bad ass and have little interest in trying to put them in a box or category. Besides being standout musicians their creative stage show is heads / tails above most other bands imho.

Surf, Garage, Instro, Punk...just appreciate them for what they do I say. Maybe it's just a regional thing that makes them a bit different...I don't know?
Imho it seems that most all above average musicians strive to do something a bit different than their predecessors / influences. It's almost a duty of sorts for those capable.
I love the SoCal Surf pioneers and the sound they created, but it's not the end all be all of the genre by a long shot.
