For those who asked or may be interested, I made another instructional video, this time for Frankie & The Pool Boys' song "Ewa on the Beach". Similar idea to what I did with "Flash of Green", but this time I showed how to play the rhythm guitar part first. If you have any questions or suggestions, fire away.
Enjoy.

Wow Ferenc that is really awesome, thanks so much for doing these, I really love Ewa (and the song's not bad either ) , so I"m definitely going to try this one.
It's stuff like this that makes this site such a great resource for beginning players like myself. This is a really outstanding contribution and I appreciate it very much.

Ferenc. I tried something like this a while ago and ran into a lot problems with lighting. You're doing well, highly effective indeed.
I'd like to see something less complex though. I don't have to hesitate for a nano here - The Raven - The drumming is straight forward and i think any band starting out
(with reverb and delay) could pick it up and run with it quickly. It's a great tune that's for sure.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried to improve the lighting over the last one. Also, thanks for the song suggestion, I will try to post some easier songs. But, I think anybody could give a shot at Ewa, it's harder than Pipeline, but easier than Miserlou.

You've missed your calling, Ferenc. Unless you are already a working guitar instructor.
Thinking ahead, you should (re)release your albums in this format, or at least supplement them this way. On disk, for sale, of course, not necessarily on YouTube. I foresee "The Dobronyi Method" and maybe "Dobronyi Demonstrates the Masters of Surf Guitar. With Supplement for Bassists (in very small print)."
All kidding aside. I actually bought a disk on how to play Misirlou once, and it was not nearly as cool, though slightly more suited to complete idiots in some aspects of the presentation.
Have you thought of overlaying transparent chord patterns? Not that you can't actually see them pretty well in these.

Thanks again, Ferenc. I think I have a better shot at this one than Flash of Green. Nice to see Babu again and the video playing in the background was cool. So well done.

Hey, I noticed that at the end of the video it says "Pollo del Mar" not Frankie and the Poolboys. Was Ewa a Pollo tune first?

I tried the melody for Ewa tonight and I had a blast. Definitely a challenge for me, but I'm going to work at it. I've never really tried pull-offs before so it took a while to figure those out.
Playing tip please: Are you supposed to sort of brush the string with the finger you're pulling off? That seemed to work otherwise I wasn't getting much sound out of the second note.

"Ewa" was the first song I completed for this project and I was editing the video while the rest of the tracks were being mixed. At that point I still hadn't decided if the CD would be released as PDM or not. I had already uploaded the video to YouTube before the decision was made to make this a splinter project

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking if you should attempt to use the finger that is performing the hammer on/pull off to pluck the string. In some cases you can, and it will give it more attack, but in general you don't have to exert that much force, especially if you are playing through an amp. A great way to practice HO/POs is to get a steady trill going with two notes. The harder your finger hits the string, the longer your trill will go on. Does that make sense?

You interpreted my question correctly. I wasn't really plucking the string with the hammer-off finger, just brushing it lightly (not pulling straight up but at a slight angle) otherwise I wasn't getting much volume on the second note. Do you start with both notes fretted then simply lift off the finger on the first note, or is it more of a lift off with the first finger while fretting with the second simultaneously (sort of a reverse hammer-on)? Probably I just need more practice, but I want to make sure my technique is right before I learn a bad habit.
Thanks Ferenc.
