Permalink tilt legs and beam blockers

New Topic

last saturday we rehearsed for the 1st time in a while, and I had quite a lot of new stuff to check out. new jap jag: very nice, will defintly be my new #1

but the biggest surprise was the tilt legs and beam blocker I installed on my amp. (bassman w/1x15 JBL D140F) .... made ALL the difference. a very consistend sound troughout the room ( approx 40 by 40 ft) consitend in frequencies ( nowhere bassy, nowhere ear-piercing highs) and consistent in volume, with a boost when standing right in fornt of it (but without being ear piercing)... all in all, the amp sounded way better then ever on itself, but also rehearsal was much nicer because everybody had the right dose of lead guitar, i.e. well descernable for everyone and loud without pushing away the other instruments for me.

anyone else use the legs and/or beamblockers?

I once used legs with a "Marshall" 1969 cab "Yes it's not surf at all I know" but it seemed to me that the amp lost some of the good low frequencies.

A week later I got rid of the legs.

I've been curious about those beam-blockers I've seen on Ted Webers site. Really works huh?

i've got the 12" on a cab with jensen neo's, and 15"on cabs with JBL's.

yes they really work, make the freq response A LOT more stable throughout the room. you know that feeling standing in front of the cab, making one step aside and the sound changes 100%, as does the volume? it really works for that. I was afraid it would take the bite out of the speakers, but it doesn't.

on the jensens I like 'em less, but i don't really like those speakers too much in the first place. the tone change didn't seem a lot more radical on the 12, though the ratio of surface covered by dome/not coverd by dome is higher, the dome being one size but the speakers obviously not.

anyway, they are cheap enough to give 'em a try.

btw, I tried the same effect by either taping the centre of the grillcloth before (SRV style) or attaching a piece of cardboard to it. doesn't work half as good. weber claims the bb reflects and spreads the highs rather then just block 'em, and I think that's 95% true.

anyway, Im very happy with them. downside: you cant see the cool alu domes through the cloth anymore Crying

I am glad you like the Jag. What does it look like?

I am glad you like the Jag. What does it look like?

too cool dude, it's got this offset waist body, with chrome control plates and a huge chrome tremsystem, and ... oh wait Embarassed

just your basic jap jag, it's one of the newer with the alder body. fiesta red with 'aged' plastic parts. I woudn't have chosen fiesta red as first option, but I came across this cheap. I was actually looking for a white/tortoise one when I came across this on ebay, and I bid the low startingprice (approx $425 ) and figured what the hell. and then I won it. it's not new but virtually. one small ding and a few scratches on the scratchplate, but I suspect it was a demo.
I actually grew to like the color and the 'aged white' stuff looks pretty good, way better then the aged white after market parts I once ordered for my strat.

I had some trouble with adjusting to the smaller scale, but having played a paulie for about 7 years before i got into surf i got it pretty quick. weird cause I could never adjust to the sgv's neck.
anyway, I now think it's one hell of a comfortable guitar to play, I just love it.

some points of interest:
I have got a mute and am thinking about installing it, but Im not sure i want to raise the bridge for that, I like the strings being relativly close to the body as with a strat. I tried out an AVI jag in store when I was shopping around, and I didn't care too much for the shimmed neck/raised strings setup.
also, i think the AV did sound better and overall felt like much more of a quality instrument (just tieing in to ongoing debates ), me getting a jap was a financial decission. the jap is still a great guitar for the money.

another thing: originally, I was original planning on getting a better strat or possibly a jm. the problem I had was, however, that I prefer the sound of the JM's higher strings, but thoughht the low strings too mellow and muddy. (for what I wnat to sound anyway), and at the same time I love the low strings of the jag and the strat, but think the high strings to shrill. now with the set-up I have now, with the beamblocker, the jag sounds just perfect and well balanced, across all strings. happy with my sound now!

incedently, precisly of described above, I think the strat's bridge pup should have been angled just the other way. design flaw imo. dd gets it though!

PS thanks for the clips about the speakers, I should pm back. anyway, the mods sound great, not jbl's, but from what i get I'd prefer them over the neo's.

My AV was originally Fiesta Red but a previous owner refinished it in Burgundy Mist. I really love the shorter scale on Jags. I own a really nice ukulele so the 24" scale was no problem compared to the uke.

Wannes,
One idea if you find yourself looking to upgrade that Jag somewhere down the line... I own a Japanese Jag too, and like you, really like the way it plays and sounds, but I will say, the Japanese pickups lack a bit in comparison to the AVRI.

After owning my Jag for about... wow... seven years or so, I swapped out the stock pickups for Seymour Duncan "Vintage for Jaguar" pickups, and I was floored with the difference. There was nothing wrong with the sound of the Japanese pups, but the Duncan had "the" sound.

With that said... anyone wanna buy a pair of Japanese Jag pickups?? Very Happy

~B~

I've been using beam blockers for years, first on a Marshall 4X12 (they have a tendancy to throw a really concentrated beam of treble just in front ofthe cab), then on my 2X15 (with JBL D-130s). I got the 4" domes for these, but I wish I would have gotten the 5" dome, I think it would have worked better on the big JBLs especially since they have tons of high end (which is needed for surf, but is better when diffused in all directions). And just like Wannes, I tried the duct tape trick, but did not like it.

So, beam blockers all the way!

Beam Blockers rule!!

My bandmates were claiming that it took the bite out of the sound, maybe slightly, but it was nothing a few slight knob tweaks couldn't solve. Overall, the fact that I can hear myself better no matter where I'm standing, plus the fact that people in audience aren't holding their ears from the ice-pick effect, it's worth the slight tone adjustment.
