i'm big on chord progressions, love inventing them, but i am bad at coming up with melodies.

so what comes first? the chicken or the egg??

There’s nothing wrong about creating chords first. I bet the melodies are already in there.

Interesting chords make for interesting melodies. No reason not to start with the chords.

ok, i'm gonna go with the chords first, then see what i can come up with...

Sing nonsense words over good chords;
play word melody on your guitar.
The phrasing of my favorite melodies is capable of being sung by a human voice.

Have you tried other instruments? Piano, voice?

jake: i should sit down with a keyboard and play back, that is a good idea.

i'm just starting to look at the shapes of the chords and concentrate on the possibilities that present themselves.....

i write from chords...or bass...or piano...and sometimes even from interesting drum parts...

then again, sometimes I find an interesting guitar melody or harmony or interval that starts the ball rolling.

really, in my experience, it seems you can start just about anywhere, and build from there...
