New Topic

...is there such a thing? i have an 'unplugged' Chantays version of pipeline, and Peter Green doing Albatross.

i was wondering what else is out there? has anyone got a trem on a acoustic?

all the best

adam.

The Duotones, and the Acoustic Surftones come to mind immediately.

There were some Gretsch Rancher flattops made with Bigsbys so it is possible to do.

When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar.

i posted a "gear demo" of me playing on a crappy nylon string acoustic guitar...an A/B test of the acoustic ASPRI reverberation unit...

I play "Surf Rider"...so, I guess you could call that acoustic surf, if you want to...

personally, I prefer Fender electric instruments and amplifiers and reverberators and drums and all that stuff...

I've never seen a Rancher with a Bigsby, but it seems do-able. Adding one to any traditional archtop acoustic should be fairly simple.
Ditto Duotones.

Thanks for posting that. The Aspri is an interesting idea. What happens if you kick it? Smile

the spruce top of your cheapo nylon classical caves in...and that might be a very good sound, indeed!

I would totally dig a big old acoustic Gretsch with a Bigsby...

Would a Taylor T-3 with a Bigs work...play thru an acoustic amp with 'verb?

As to the topic, purists will say that surf is best played on electrics, no sax and no keys, but my ears enjoy the different tone of other instruments, so acoustics like the Duo Tones is fine, kinda like hearing a cover of a classic surf song played by others (Martini 50 by The Blue Hawaiias or Squad Car by Los Straightjackes)

Happy Sunsets!

As long as it's done in the name of art. Smile

Gerald Ross does a wunnerful version of Apache on ukulele. The only sample of it I can find at the moment is on http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/8865056-gerald-ross (about 30 seconds worth)

Then there's this cute girl performing a Miserlou/Pipeline medley on what is said to be a ukulele, but looks and sounds to me more like a mandolin. (oops - not "unplugged")

Okay, unplugged ukulele Pipeline - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUhwRvubnHc

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

She is cute. I'd have probably watched even if she couldn't play, but play she did.

I think that she's playing some sort of tiple uke, something with a pair of coursed strings in the center for a high-string effect. I remember seeing and playing one years ago, quite possibly a Martin. The extra string tuned an octave higher on the coursed center strings brings the sound to life.

cool, keep 'em coming..... so i'm thinkin the mp3 i downloaded illegally off napster back in 2001 Titled Chantays - Pipleline unplugged. might actually be The Duo-Tones...??

The Chantays did Pipeline unplugged in the mid 90's
the Duo-tones didn't start till the 2000s sometime I believe.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I remember seeing the Gin Blossoms play an acoustic version of Pipeline in the early '90s. Actually, I think they played a surf medley, both electric and acoustic.

The California Guitar Trio does a few surf songs.

I guess it's not 100% unplugged, but my gf and I jam with hand percussion and a Dano Honeytone all the time.

And they do quite a great job of it, too.

I play solo ukulele surf. Not the U900 type (Japanese Surf versions of some of the Ventures), but I do do Walk, Don't Run & Perfidia along with some other classics, and Urban Surf Kings pieces. I actually had my first paying uke/surf gig yesterday. Very Happy
