Im planning to add some fuzz to my surf rigg.
I now use a Twin reverb, reverb unit , line 6 echopark and a strat.
What pedals are there for a nice warm fuzz?
Could the fender fuzz/wah be something?

The Fuzz wah probably isn't anything special. I'd recommend staying away from most pedals that contain multiple effects. Also, you are probably going to get a lot of brighter sounding fuzz pedals recommended to you. I'd recommend something like a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face for that warmer fuzz sound. While I have never played the pedal I'm going to recommend, a very reliable friend sent me some comparison clips betweent he Fuzz I own and this pedal, and this pedal does sound warmer/bigger: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXR-M173-Classic-108-Fuzz-Guitar-Effects-Pedal?sku=150572 I own an early Dallas Arbiter copy made by Dunlop. |

The big three for a vintage fuzz sound are Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1A, Mosrite Fuzzrite and Vox Tone Bender. Some people use the Fuzzface too and the new Boss Boss FZ-5 claims to get a vintage 60's Maestro type sound which is what you want to play with surf. The tried and true Boss DS-1 sounds cool and they're on Craigslist all the time for $20.00 or less. It is more distortion than fuzz though. Another old reliable in this category is the ProCo Rat. |

I'm really into the Rat myself for the non-fuzz more distortion pedal. You can get close to fuzz tones with it. |

Try an Ampeg Scrambler reissue. I also like the Boss FZ3. Both are decent alternatives to taking out a loan to buy vintage... |

I have the FZ-5. My only complaint about it is that it's very hard to get that perfect "sputter" out of the Maestro clone. It's often too sputtery to deal with, or if you turn the fuzz up, it's wall of fuzz like a fuzz face, fuzzbrite, or a muff. The fuzz dial goes from like 7 o'clock to 5 o'clock, and at 12:00 it's supposedly at the highest setting of the vintage pedal. From 12:00 to 5:00 it's in turbo mode. It's hard to find useful tones in the vintage settings. Great tones in the turbo settings, but like I said, finding a level of sputter that would make a listener go "Ah! Maestro!" is very difficult. |

I agree. The Fuzzbrite is cool and almost nails the Fuzzrite sound, but the D67 FuzzMite seems a little more dynamic. And while I've only used it sparingly, that middle knob can thicken things up a bit if you want some mids. The Fuzzbrite is easier to find though. |

Yes on the FZ3, but NOOO on the Scrambler--a great pedal, but now going for crazy dollars in both reissue AND original form. After seeing the boogers all over Ebay at 400 bucks plus, I'm glad I got mine for 125! I'd second the Ashbass Fuzzbrite, if it's an old-school angry-kazoo style buzz bomb you're after. And it can be had for cheap (a little over 100 bucks). --Crispy |

The old Univox Super Fuzz is a great fuzz (orange with blue treadle cover). However, prices are $3-400. Guyatone built a clone of it, the TZ2 The Fuzz, and having owned both, it's pretty close. I'm lucky enough to have one of the original Scramblers, but unlucky in that it needs a new input jack- and it's an odd one. The RI's sounded pretty good to my ears, though. I didn't realize they were getting expensive. A couple of years ago you could find them used for about $125.00. |

I still have that Univox Super Fuzz (blue and orange) and still works, believe it or not. I used to play the songs Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl, " "Like A Hurricane" and "Born To Be Wild Wild" with my band in the 70's-80's. |

To me fuzz is all about 60s sounds. I have a Maestro Fuzz-Tone RI as well as a Fuzzbrite. The former does a great job on covering the sounds of the early to mid 60s while the latter does the mid to later part of the decade equally good. — |
