Guitarist looking for Surf Band: 48 yrs old, reliable and professional. I live in Staten Island, so I'm looking for a NYC / North Jersey situation. Tons of gigging experience. Genre appropriate equipment. I'm somewhat new to the genre (approx. 3 yrs), but I know most of the standards, and have developed a taste for 3rd Wave, ie; Laika, Mermen, some Straitjackets etc. Excellent memory retention (I won't cause trainwrecks at the gigs!) I come to gigs and rehearsals prepared, and ask only that others do the same.

C'mon, in the world's biggest metropolitan area, there isn't one surf band that needs another guitarist???
I need a venue to drag out the Jags and my Brownface Band-Master......LOL!

Scary isn't it? I've been looking for a drummer in the NYC area forever! Not like the old days when you could grab an Aquarian and take your pick from the HUGE classifieds section.

Craigslist seems to have replaced the Aquarian and the Village Voice, but I haven't seen any surf gigs in there. I guess if I want a surf gig I'll have to hang out at Otto's and "shmooze".

Flatracer, Try writing a persuasive listing on Craigslist to get some enthusiastic musicians to give it a try. List all the positive attributes of the style e.g. it's very musical, each instrument is more important than in a vocal band, no singer hassles, it's very dynamic and versatile - ranging from 1-4-5 blues based riffing to very dark intense epics. Mention for guitarists it's all about tone, here's the band that all that tweaking will make a difference. Then list the modern bands you like with links, at the very least you may turn a few people onto the genre.
Also you may want to stress that it's a project band, so that the commitment doesn't scare anyone off, but let them know you'd like to see it continue on as long as possible. I'd say other than the drummer you can have much success converting musicians over to surf. For drumming they'd have to understand the surf beat and it's role in defining the style and that takes some familiarity with the genre already. Not impossible, but preferable.
Good luck.

Great advice Danny!
That's where I was when fortunately I got called by an existing band to take over for Guitar Bob.

Yep. If all else fails, start your own band from scratch. If you wait around for the perfect situation, it may never happen.

Craigslist is the place, alright. I placed and ad for a trumpet player for my horn band, and got five responses from some serious sounding guys! Going to audition a few of them tonight. Wish me luck.
I have an ad in NESMA. Not a lot of action from it, though.
Craigslist might just be the place to go to scratch my "surf itch".
Thanks,
Eric
