i'm finding my first and second take on a garageband track is okay, but if i keep deleting and recording again i end up with a terrible latency problem. the only way i've been able to resolve it is to shut down garageband and start it back up. anyone else have this problem?

What kind of soundcard or audio interface are you using?
i'm using the lightsnake and just remembered when i got it, it had something about latency. so in reading the instructions over again it has a fix for latency problems by using the splitter on the jack. jack into guitar and another cord into an amp. hopefully, this will cure that problem.
now if i could only cure my tone, my playing, etc...........sigh............
i'm trying to record something for the comp but it's been a real learning experience from the start. i hope to have something for the 2009 instead of the 2010. i'm also very ready to move on to a new tune.

I haven't tried recording via garageband yet. Since we have very similar computers I'm curious to see your progress on this problem.
I'm using the M-Audio Mobile Pre as my audio interface.

The blue snowball didn't work for you?
i'm still experimenting. i've been recording from my guitar to my reverb to a pre amp and into the computer.
i'm very unhappy with the bass recorded straight into the computer via the pre amp and my next step is to use the snowball.
this stuff is all new to me.
the snowball did a really good job of picking up the phone ringing and traffic noise on the road.

Try the middle position #2 on the toggle switch on the back, and place the mic about a foot away from the speaker. Then adjust your input level in GB.
No need for a preamp, it should just go straight into the USB.
I've never had a problem with ambient noise in that position.

Even on my MAC I had some problems with latency. But I just shut it down, and re-opened GB. It fixed it.
Looking forward to hearing your new tracks!

I'm a veteran GB user and I can't think why you should be getting this problem. Even on my old G4 iBook I can get quite a few tracks going with effects before latency becomes an issue. On my iMac (the first Intel one they made) I've run over 20 simultaneous tracks without issues - and I've used both computers with a variety of interfaces and just the internal hardware for quite a while on the iMac. There's got to be something wrong going on there. Take it into the 'Genius Bar' at your nearest Apple store and they will help you. The need to restart to clear the fault suggests that some cache is filling up perhaps.

i was happening when i recorded over the same track several times. quitting GB always resolved the issue.
the closest apple bar to me is three hours.
i'll get it.

Try completely deleting out the track that you are recording over. I think it is having trouble rewriting over the track.

Try adjusting the mic placement. You may need to move it back farther if you're using a loud amp.

i'm just using a deluxe reverb set on three. i was thinking i should turn it up a bit. like i said, this is a learning experience for me.

Yep, you're better off keeping the amp fairly loud and adjusting the mic placement or input levels. That way you don't compromise tone as much.

As a rule, it's hard to record a good guitar tone with a condenser mic. The cheap range of Shures (the SM58 copy is the 85) are really good for mic'ing amps and cost very little. The economy is made in the lack of handling noise suppression rather than the sound quality.

Yeah, but you can't plug an SM57 or 58 directly into a USB without using some sort of interface.
The snoball's middle setting - cardiod capsule with 10db pad works pretty well for under $100, plus you don't need any other hardware.

Latency might be due to drivers. I've never used Garageband but check your driver status in options for any adjustments. My friend was having Latency problems with his PC based laptop and i found some ASIO drivers which worked with his built-in sound chip ok. ASIO are dedicated low latency drivers for audio work.
