I rarely get chance to see a server in operation. While looking for a new pc case i came across this photo and it made me think of SG101, all our communications and the film the Matrix! Smile I have no idea what you'd use this server for but it looks quite elegant with (correct me if i'm wrong) a raid array card feeding 11 hot swappable drives, half for duty and half for back up.(?) Just out of curiosity is the SG101 system more complex than this and does it require constant upgrading and care. I'm not sure about other places in the world but from where i am SG101 is consistently quick and reliable (lightningly quick in fact). Last question, why was SG_101_ chosen as a name.. thanks.

That's indeed a SATA RAID array- impossible to tell what level from looking at it, but with 12 drives you're probably seeing either RAID5 or RAID10 (or even a mix of RAID's, one for the OS, one for the data), which has striping (for performance) and parity (for redundancy), perhaps disk twelve is a spare (instantly kicks in when a drive fails).

Our server probably looks nothing like that. It is in a rack, not a consumer case like that. I have never seen our server, nor do I even know where it is. I rent it from a hosting company. They provide the power and cooling. I just administer it remotely.

Our server is:
AMD Opteron 1216 HE (2 x 2.4 GHz)
2 x 250 Gig Hard drives (RAID 1)
2 Gigs of RAM
Ubuntu Linux 8.04

...and if you're into this kind of gear porn, this is the last one I built back in Dec '07 (still using it). No RAID on this one; I initially used to use RAID0 on an earlier one for the supposed speed increase, but have since realized that RAID0 is complete bollocks. The wall 'o fans (7 in total) are there because I'm overclocking a quad from 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz.

I started a Yahoo Group and called it SurfGuitar101 in 2001 because I got flamed for asking about strings on Cowabunga. Cowabunga and Reverborama were the 2 main sources of internet info on surf music. I didn't want to tread on any toes and compete with them, so the angle for my group was the musician aspect of surf music. I had discovered surf music in the mid-90's and had recently rekindled my interest in playing the guitar. I simply wanted to learn from the guitarists I admired on Cowabunga.

Once we got a lot of members and the other groups kind of floundered, we gradually dropped the musician only aspect of the group.

I registered the domain name SurfGuitar101.com in April of 2004 fresh off seeing the Surf Coasters on their 1st US tour. At that time SG101 was just a static HTML site meant primarily for storing photos and videos and as a supplement to the Yahoo Group. (This was before flickr, google photos, imagebucket, etc).

At the end of February 2006 I installed this sh*tty software and the interactive version of SG101 was born. We closed down the Yahoo group a few months later.

At that time I was renting space on a shared server. My host got kind of mad at me because our site was hogging the server because our site became so popular. So a few years ago we jumped to a dedicated server. We now have the whole box to ourselves and this allows us to do things like host an IRC server, multiple websites, and host the podcast. It does cost more but thanks to the community it is worth doing.

I like that Maccish case... we pretty much have the same video card (I have an MSI 8800Ultra 768MB 384-bit, never bothered to buy another for SLI though). Since we're geeking out now, my mobo is an ABIT IP35 Pro LGA, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 cpu, 4GB (2x2GB) G.Skill DDR2 SDRAM DDR2, 2 WD 150GB Raptor X's (one for Windoze, one for Linux), a 1TB Seagate Barracuda for the data, a couple of other 400GB drives for backups and mythtv, a Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350 tuner, 1 DVD-ROM drive and 1 DVD±R, all inside of a Cooler Master Stacker 830 Evolution case w/ 1000W PSU.

(Sorry everyone, I'm done now. :?)

Thanks for taking time to explain, just shows how little i know! Embarassed
I once had a job collecting 2nd user computers from various locations mainly around London, i was completely unskilled but they soon had me auditing, repairing and preparing for export (IBM PS2's). So now i always build my own computers, funny enough i have a Lian Li PC-V1000 Plus case much like yours.

Morphball, that's a wicked looking creation you have there Smile

Another question: Why did Cowabunga close down? At the time i was just starting to understand the surf scene and never had chance to visit the site.

Thanks... and wow, hard to believe it's almost 3 years old... I haven't really even turned it off since then. In the 90's I would have already been preparing to replace it by now, but thankfully the CPU-frequency war is over... and GPU's aren't a huge deal either since people tend to game on consoles these days.

I've been running a 32bit/agp DFI based system for nearly 5 years day and night, just couldn't kill it. I now have a mild upgrade 939 board which allows me to run Street Fighter IV (it had to be done!) I'll be going i7 next year i think. I use Raptors and raid0 also, they such great drives.

It isn't closed. You can still join and get messgages either via email or read them on the web interface.

RAID0 is okay if you're only using it to run the OS, but in reality your raptors at 10000 RPM are fast enough... my love affair with striping ended because I also used it for data too, a drive died and somehow my weekly backups had become incomplete at some point... so useless clusters on the other disk. Lesson learned the hard way. Laughing

yeah, Cowabunga, and Reverborama are still up and running,
but they are pretty much ghost towns,
maybe 1 post a day.
basically show announcements etc...
that people post on many other yahoo groups.

Jeff, a couple of years ago a friend wrote to me and mentioned Cowabunga was now sadly finished. I had no idea what Cowabunga was at the time and to be honest i don't know so very much now. It must have been quite a strong outfit to produce the Cowabunga! the surf box set. cheers.

Cowabunga the email list / Yahoo Group had nothing to do with the Rhino Records Cowabunga box set.

Thanks Brian, for the pic & for putting this site up. I've met a lot of cool people through it & have been turned onto some great music as a result. Also, I've learned more than a thing or two, which is just gravy. Lastly, what is up with server manufacturers using SEX to sell their products? Next thing you know, some hodad band will be doing it...
