Permalink Cab Suggestions/Advice needed...

New Topic

Hello all!

After lurking here for a awhile I've finally registered so I could pose a question. Like some of you, I've purchased a Crate Power Block and now find my self shopping for a cab. I'm currently waffling between a 2x12 w/Jensen Neo's or a 1x15 with maybe a Weber California. I'm leaning toward the 1x15 as it would take up (slightly) less space in my already cramped apartment. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated! Also, what about open-backed vs. closed-back cabs?

Thanks,

Dean

Never heard the Jensen Neo, but the Weber 15" Cali is a sweet speaker!
Not 100 percent clean (especially the ainico) but I like it that way. It's got a nice slight low-end growl and the aluminum dome softens the highs a bit.

Lot's of people swear by the closed back, but mine's in an open back combo so I don't have much choice. Still sounds great to me though!

Hey welcome!

no doubt you've followed the crate block thread so you know there's been talk about the speakers too there.

Ive got 2"1x15 cabs with a JBL D140F in each, and a 2x12 with jensen neo's in it, just so you know where I come from, other's opinbions might differ as always.

what it breaks down to is, imo, this:

want typical slightly metalic hard hitting surf sound? get the weber cali.
want TONS and TONS of ultra clean headroom, and a more flat (as in, flat EQ) sounding speaker, get the Jensen Neo combo.

alternatively, you could choose a 15" neo (less headroom but I'imagine still a lot) or a Jensen K series (i think that's the highest power rating, heck the site for that) or a differnet weber. Ted Weber and his employees have been very friendly and helpful to me, both on his forum and in private e-mails, and gave very sound advice even before I ever bought anything of them, so shoot him a mail of you wnat to know anyhing about his other spekears. they're very resonably priced.

since all these speakers, cali and Neo too, are available in 12" and 15" and multiple ohm-ratings, the speaker-kind and size are things you can decide sepratly. I personally am on the lookout for 2x12 weber cali right now, cause I like the 12"'s better when mic'ed.

as for cabs, if it needs to be low budget, look out for 'butchered cabs' the old 2X15"fridge type cabs which were at one point cut in half and made into a 1x15", or look out for homemade cabs. they are all worth nothing, I scored three fenderstyle cabs for under 50 bucks each in a year or so.

good luck, and check back! oh, be sure to check all the websites for fender, weber etc, there's tons of info all over the place!

You can always make your own cab. For my Showman I made a 2x12 cab to the specifications of a Showman cab and it sounds better when my Showman is played through it than my open back 1x15 Vibroverb speaker.

1x15 or 2x12 both sound great...it's a personal preference thing. Same with open vs. closed backs.

I'm a huge fan of the Weber California Series speakers. I have a 15" ceramic in my 100w Vibrasonic combo, and a 12" alnico in one of my Deluxe Reverbs. Each has surf tone to die for. The stock Fender speakers were crap in comparison...even the Oxford that was the original speaker in the (real) '65 DR.

How about a 21x32x12 Bandmaster or Bassman cab with either 2- 12's, or you could make a new baffle board and fit a single 15" if you want a little more low end thump. Or, as Jake suggested, if you are handy with woodworking tools, make your own!

I don't know how old Dean is, but I made my cab with my dad. With all the correct tolex, tilt back legs, corners, handles, logo, et cetera... it cost about $200 and I used pine as the wood. It would be cheaper even to use plywood, which all non-Custom shop amps are made out of. I put Jensen Mod speakers in mine, probably the completely wrong speaker for surf but I enjoy the sound I get out of the Showman, better than Eminence 15" with an open back anyways.

Making it yourself is really much cheaper, if you want the Fender look, and it's really fun to do and I learned a lot. Tolexing isn't as hard as you think it will be. My hardest part was the grille cloth.

Jake, that really depends on what you can find. I agree with you that making your own cab is rewarding, and if your after an exact copy cheaper then a vintage one or mojocabs or something like that.

However, if it needs to be budget, you can find way cheaper fender style cabs then 200 bucks. might take a while to find one though. I built two cabs myself and in hindsight regret it. Could have done a lot cheaper.

is your cab the cab in the pictures you posted? looks sweet. I'd love a short review of the mod speakers, btw! Idea

Wannes is right, building a replica cab is not a cheap option, just like building your own guitar. It's the hardware and materials that costs, they nail you for buying such small quantities. That being said, if you're handy, you'll find it very rewarding to build your own. I built a showman tone-ring and after inspecting actual showman cabs, I've realized that mine is built better - neener neener! Not that better construction has any affect on the sound. Perhaps the best solution is to pick up a battered cabinet cheap and re-tolex it.

I've never had any other speakers in the cab so I can't really give a review of the mod speakers.

hmm. can you tell which guitar is you one the recordings that are currently up on the Verb's myspace?

I'm seriously curious about these speakers!

I'm the rhythm guitar. And on two older guitars that used to be up there were two disctinct not-rhythm parts.

Thanks to all who responded! Based on the replies, I'll probably go for a 15" weber cali (ceramic) in a 18x18x14 (open) cab (since I'm not looking for a "gigging cab", but would like a little more "umpf" than a 1x12). It appears (to me) to be the best comprimise in performance/sound vs. size in the apartment. Feel free to let me know if this is a poor decision...

BTW, I'm very stoked to be seeing Los Straitjackets tonight in Seattle!
