I submit for your listening pleasure a medley of Misirlou (with a distinct Shigeoness) and Hava Nagila, with no small portion of Meshuggahness. All comments are encouraged, even mean ones, as I'm always trying to improve.
Sure, I'll listen to this classic rendered by someone else again!
Sorry, I don't have 4 minutes and 23 seconds to spare.
- Recording: Sony PCM-D50 using the onboard condenser mics
- DAW: Audacity on a PC running Linux
- Guitar: Yamaha SGV800, bridge position
- Bass: None! (Bass lines also played on SGV, pitch reduced in post by -50)
- Amp/Effects: Gomez El Sonido & G-spring
- Drums: Alesis SR-16
- Caffeinated Beverage: Golden Yunnan Black Tea

(And of course, if you have any technical questions regarding my "studio" and the production of this... piece... please ask.)

My only negative comment is to get a bass! I thought it was programmed bass when I heard it. Also, bass guitars are fun. Is the black unit on the floor the Alesis SR-16?
I really liked how sharp the guitar attack was. Not too much dwell on the reverb. And it, of course, retained a nice drip.

Nice job! I haven't got drums and bass to sound that good.
Try Mountain Dew if you want to kick it up a notch.

Sounds pretty damned good to me. I happen to think that using the guitar as a bass in a pinch is pretty clever! If it was me, though, I would get hold of a bass. Gotta have one.

Thanks guys! I agree that the bass was the weak link in the project, digitally altering made it sound, well, really digital. I'm already budgeting for a used Jazz bass though, it is indeed a really fun instrument.
Jake: The drum machine is in fact that device on the floor, I used it as a metronome with the headphones to record the guitar/bass, then programmed the drum tracks. (And I do mean "tracks"... the SR-16 has a song mode, but it kinda sucks. I had to do it in several parts and stitch it together in Audacity.)

That is part of the fun of creating music though. A lot of my favorite bands put the most time in getting the drums right. Building the tracks to get them just right.

Excellent, sir!
Is the pictured set-up your living room? If so, how loud was the amp at the time of recording?

Thanks again for the very generous comments, you've seriously made it worth the effort.
brandonio: Awesome!
Jake: That makes sense; I put a ridiculous amount of hours into it so that it wouldn't sound like an afterthought... I have a feeling that if I bought a small kit (and learned to play) it might take even longer without the quantizing though.
Strat: It's set up in a small upstairs room with the 1 door and one sealed window. No soundproofing, so the volume was only about 2, with the recorder right up to the grille (mic sensitivity on my D50 was about 4; attacking it hard at these settings still caused some very minor clipping).

I, also find the bass to be a bit off. Maybe some judicious experimentation with EQ setting pre-frequency munging would help a bit. Still clever, though.

Sounds great. Those two songs really mesh together well. The bass is not that bad, but the intro riff is KILLER

Thanks everyone, I'm really grateful for the advice and for the very kind comments. I've chalked down the "bass" trick as moderately successful, but I think one would have better results even with the cheapest student bass. (I'm currently looking into one of those Chinese basses that Rondo sells for the next project.) Still, if anyone is interested in more detailed instructions on how to fake it, just let me know, it's pretty simple.
As an aside, I've got the video version of this up on Youtube... odd that it's much easier to share videos these days than it is audio... the Internet's come a long way in the last 10 years, hahaha.

Very nice performance, the guitar sound is great! Thanks for posting the YouTube video, I picked up some clues on playing to these tunes.

... get a bass! ... bass guitars are fun.
I agree with Jake about the fun part. I got an Epiphone EB0, short scale bass. It was inexpensive but a little muddy so I put on a cheap bridge pickup and can now get satisfying sound playing with a pick. If the long scale of a regular bass seems intimidating (it was for me) this might work, sort of a bass for guitar players.

That's a nice looking Epi, I would be totally happy with something like that. Long-scale bass isn't too bad though after you've adapted a bit, I used to play a long-scale in my last band back in '92 for a couple of years, I still have recordings of me slapping the shit out of it like Flea (minus the talent)... most bassists seem to prefer them too, I'm not sure why.
