Permalink fender dynamic vibrato is buzzzzzzzyy!

hey everyone, good to be here! I have been playing guitar for 10 years but just a month or so started a surf band with two friends of mine. It is sounding pretty damn good and we have our first real gig later this afternoon.

For this band I am using a seafoam green jag-stang from 96 that my buddy pretty much gave me because he can't stand it (he's a pretty particular guy). It is a seriously surfy guitar and it sounds great for this stuff.

The only issue is that something is buzzy as hell. It is coming from the bridge/dynamic vibrato system but I can't put my finger on it exactly. Everything seems to be tight down there... I pulled it apart and nothing is hanging loose, and the two springs are attached where they should be. Maybe it's the saddle pieces in the bridge? I have no idea. The vibrato works fine but I am loosing precious sustain with every buzz... Does anyone have experience with this problem?

Thanks for your help!

I used to work as a guitar repair guy, but I don't have any experience with this particular type of bridge so feel free to take this with a grain of salt.

Basic strategy for tracking down buzzes: Play hard. Touch different parts of the mechanism until the buzzing stops.

Bits of foam rubber or tape are useful for damping buzzes when you're trying to find the problem, but you probably don't want them as a permanent fix. Be careful with tape, some kinds can leave sticky goo that's hard to remove.

You can also get a string buzz if somebody who doesn't know what he's doing has been filing the saddles, but that has a distinctive sitar-like sound that's easy to recognize.

I'm pretty sure it's not the saddles, they haven't been messed with and it still rattles when I hold them still. It sounds like it might be coming from the springs themselves... but there's no real way to tell.

This is the same kind of vibrato (I believe) that is on the Jaguar, or whatever the white guitar is on Surf Guitar 101's logo. It may be a cheapo model but it does work pretty well, all buzzing aside. It has a better feel than the standard strat tremolo.

I believe a Jag-Stang has a Mustang style vibrato system.

I had a problem like you describe once with my Jaguar. It was the vibrato arm rattling in the socket. Wrapping a piece of teflon tape around the arm fixed that. Good luck.
