Anyone know anything about Die Sputniks? Not The Spotnicks - I have lots of their CD's in my collection. I'm talking about Die Sputniks, who did the great song "Sputniks Thema". It was on the Surfbeat Behind The Iron Curtain disc, and The Incredible Sucking Spongies did an awesome version for our Diggin' For Gold CD, but I don't know much about this band. Where were they based, were they ever popular, and what releases did they put out, if any?

I have to ask our bass player, he re-released some tracks on his label in the 90s. I know that the band started in Berlin Köpenick in the early 60s and had several 45s released on the east german Amiga label and accompanied a greek pop singer on one or two 45s. They are still active.

I really like the "Sputniks Thema" too. Had a look on YouTube and found a video of the song displaying the two Big Beat comps that the Sputniks had several songs on. According to the Pebbles liners they later cut at least four 45s on their own.

Never heard "Etage 8" before but it's great as well and appearantly was included on the first Big Beat volume:
