Anyone have any affordable suggestions in the $200-300 range?

Thx,

For me, I've always been impressed with teh Shure Beta 52 A. Hell, I think you can't go wrong with Shure mics for any kind of recording...

Check it out on Musician's Friend:

Ditto on the Shure Beta 52. It's the "SM57 of Bass mics".

I found that the Sennheiser 421 is great for live and in the studio I would try a ribbon mic.

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

My Shure Beta 52 must be defective, it never sounded right. AKG D112 always sounded better.

I have to disagree, a ribbon has too much presence rise for a bass drum plus a bass drum will just destroy a ribbon element if it gets too close.
Ask my first drummer about that, lol.

I like an AKG D112 or EV RE-30, although the EV is kinda old and hard to find.

The EV RE-20 is a great large diaphram mic, commonly used for lower frequencies- Kick drums, bass amps, and FM Djs...

Thanks for the great tips. We're now recording the kit with one LDC mic, kind of looking at the set as one instrument, instead of a bunch of parts to mix into a whole. After listening to a bunch of early recordings, we thought we'd give it a try. If it works, life will be easier (sort of?!)
