There's a pretty big difference between this: and vintage tort. Of course, there's also a big price difference, so that's fair. I'm thinking of framing my Frankie guard though. Love that guard! image I might get one made out of St. Vincent's "Marry Me". That would pretty much be the best guard of all time. — IMO. Top

The first one is my "Number One", the best playing/sounding Fender P-Bass of several that I've had in the past 40+ years. It's a mongrel, though - a 1965 Precision with a rare ash body in see-through blonde and a L99xxx neck plate, one of the last pre-CBS ones. It now has a Warmoth Jazz Bass neck and a Lollar pickup that replaced a Seymour Duncan Antiquity that replaced the original. I rewired it with correct cloth covered wiring and installed new CTS pots, a .047 uF Orange Drop cap and a set of Thomastik-Infield Jazz flatwounds. This is my go-to P-Bass for studio bass work, which is my main gig these days. The second one is a real 1957 Fender Precision (11/57 neck date) which was formerly owned by the late Paul Goddard, bassist for the Atlanta Rhythm Section and Roy Orbison's Candymen road band. Before Paul switched to a Rickenbacker 4001 in 1978, he used this bass on the first three ARS albums and before that, radio hits "Stormy", "Spooky" and "Traces" for the Classics IV. What became the Atlanta Rhythm Section was actually the house band at Studio One in Doraville, GA, sorta the Southern version of L.A.'s Wrecking Crew. Here is a clip of ARS' "Another Man's Woman" which IMO contains one of the great rock bass solos of all time that Paul played on the '57 Precision. I've spent the last couple of years thinning a collection down to "keepers" I'm actually still in process. I still have a heck of a lot of guitars and as the process goes on it gets harder to release instruments because all the remaining guitars sound good at this point (to me) but the reality is I only play so many of them and having too many choices and clutter bothers me more and more every year. Same here, over the past few decades I had acquired WAY more gear than I needed. In the past year I have sold several guitars and a few amps including some nice vintage and Custom Shop stuff that I rarely played. However, in a weak moment a few months ago I bought a new AV '58 Tele (couldn't pass it up for the price...) and later the same week traded two P-basses for a new '58 AV Precision. I have a thing for the '57-59 style "gold guard" basses.
