I got it today, but could only read bits here and there so far.
My favorite quote currently is Johnny Bartlett saying:
See, a lot of surf bands (in recent years) got it so wrong. Its not just the guitar you use, or the sound you get, or the clothes you wear
its the whole package.
I encourage anyone with an interest in Surf to buy it asap. Its just epic.

Isn't $40 a bit steep? I'm wondering, what does he mean, the whole package?

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

Contrary, its great value for money. My sister had given my a 30 coupon for my birthday, but I would have gotten it anyway, I swear.
The whole package means the following:
haircut, shoes, attitude, off-stage behavior, onstage behavior, vocabulary, record collection, board length - you get the picture?
You should live it from the ends of your hair to the tips of your toes. Look at The Surfites, f.e.

Thanks I was thinking that. I think surfing is important for surf guitarists. I'm not only doing it for that reason though. I've wanted to surf since before I liked surf music.

I get that. But theres those guys who dont want to or cant surf and this book can virtually built the necessary knowledge, impressions, world, whatever around them. I had wanted to surf, or at least try it one day in the mid seventies as little kid in front of german TV. It must have been Crystal Voyager and another 70s film they showed. There were also photos of surfing in magazines ones in a while. Then I discovered rocknroll and skateboards and still didnt know about surf music, but that changed in the summer I turned 12 in 1978 via the Beach Boys. In retrospect its more like Surf found me, not vice versa.

I think Surf is gaining popularity back. Most of the time, it's in the background on commercials or ads or stuff. I kind of hope it doesn't become mainstream, like the way MTV tryed to make rock n roll. That's why there's no good modern rock bands really. Surf is one of the last genres with good modern musicians IMO. Blues, IDK, I really only listen to older stuff.

Whoa there on the generalizations, Kman.
I learned how to play "Wipeout" by body surfing in San Diego. True story.

Mine came early this week. Great book. Brings back lots of memories growing up in that culture.

I thought most people grew out of playing dress-up/make-believe by the age of 10.
Not Mr. Dressup!

I'm ordering my copy of the book today. Sounds like a good source of information on the "scene" back then.

I would definitely beg to differ on there being no good modern rock bands. I would actually say there are some great modern rock bands. And rock band is a terrible term. Let us just call them bands. A good band is a good band regardless of era, genre, or gender.

Good point, I meant the stuff MTV endorses. There are great bands out there.

Is that why you look like you just stepped out of Sun Records circa 1956 on your MySpace page?

Take this stuff offline please. This is a thread about an important new book, not a place to grind axes between certain forum members.

I didn't do anything but discuss the book, surfing and music! I've learned my lesson.

But you didn't learn enough of a lesson. Brian wasn't speaking to you. What you did in this response is act like a dog who feels he deserves a treat by sitting when asked.

What are you, the haircut police?
I don't talk in 50 year old slang, I don't wear "vintage" clothes, and my behavior onstage or offstage is not some kind of "bygone era" reenactment charade. What is it exactly you have a problem with? My hair? Wow...get a grip.
Chill dude. Anyway, the picture looks cool. But I didn't have a problem with what Kawentzmann said either. All I'm saying is don't be so quick to poo-poo what others are saying.
But, Brian's right. We should drop this and talk about the book, which I do want to get, but have not yet done so.
