Permalink messer chups, anyone??????

New Topic

anyone ever heard of this band?

http://www.myspace.com/messerchups

it has something to do with surf Confused

they play in my city next weekend. depending on the time Im probably going to check 'em out, even though I have to pay E10 for a festival ticket of which Im not going to see any other band. It might be absolutely awesome (open minded as always ) or it might be one of thsoe things that are terrible but you're nonetheless glad you saw it cause it was so bizarre.

wow!!?? wierd but I kinda like it.....

I'd go see them if they were playing around here.

Enjoy Wannes,

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I saw them live in Israel a few years ago.
They played with Lydia Kavina(sp?) who is one of the best Theremin players around.
If they're playing with her, I can reccomend it, if not, it still might be cool.
They had 1 guitar - pretty twangy, 1 bass, and maybe a drum machine.
Can't remember exactly as I was busy watching Lydia play.

Enjoy,
Ran

The Scimitars

I would kill to see the Messer Chups. One of my favorite bands

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

well, don 't kill anyone you wouldn't have want to kill otherwise just for seeing the messerchups. mediocre at best. mini review:

great guitarist, jag with redknob Fender tube amp, onboard reverb. very decent sound, though not a classical surf sound, more a spagetti western twang sound. his playing was good too, though more riff based then melodic, but with a very fluid style, and lots of sitarlike decorations in his playing.
bass adequate, good timing, boring parts. (polka style root - fifth on more then half the songs) ... nice thuddy sound on what looked like an old jap 60's bass with flats. looked a bit like a saturn, but the headstock had band decal instead of the brand name. didn't see no bass-amp, just a 4x12 cab.

the rest of the band (drums, some other percussion, 2nd guitar and occasional voice over) was on a cd with which they played along. the "show" was thus mapped out every step of the way, with sometimes the band starting again halfway applause, and other times an awkward silence before they started again.

they had awesome video projection of 60's horror and striptease acts, with lots of cheesy 60's editing tricks, and this was form beginning to end spot on edited to thebeats of the msuic. very well done.

on the other hand, the downside, not a real live band, but two people just standing there playing along with a backing track and film.

it was very weird. I can understand how the video and cd backing track work together, but on the other hand, there was NOTHING on that backing track that couldn't have been done live so it added nothing musically, and pretty much ruined the experience of live music. At the same time, synchronizing the video with the performance could have been done by using a clicktrack for the (or rather "a" hypothetical) drummer, or by simply getting a vj with the band, which is becoming quite common. so tehre is technically not a reason to do it like this. and anyway, Id rather have a real live band and less synchronized video, if need be.

in short, great music played well by a great guitarplayer, and still not entertaining. the cd('s) are probably great, they have a dvd out which should be entertaing, but next time they play my hometown Im gonna pass (not that it's very likely)
.
funfact: they played popcorn and Das Model, both non-surf covers also done by the treble spankers.

current state of mind: Confused

final judgement: kudos for the attempt, experiment failed.

Bummmmer. I guess that's a relief, I doubt I'll get a chance to see them ever

YESTERDAY I DISCOVER "Zombie Shopping"...GREAT CDM LOVE THE POP CORN AND MODEL COVERS , GREAT REVERB SOUND, JUST CHECK ´EM OUT Rock

El Papu & los Fantasticos Reverberantes

Something tells me that the Messer Chups maybe calling it quits. Now don't quote me on this but when a band releases their "Very Best of" which was in fact released this year. That my friend is a good sign of a band calling it a day.Though the "Very Best Of" isn't what I'd consider their best .I think it's a safe bet to get all Messer Chups albums, and make your own.

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

To be honest, I eventually caught them in New York and was a little disappointed that with the release of zombie shopping they had gone a lot more trad. Obviously, I like traditional surf music too, but they had a really good sound going with albums like Crazy Price and without their electronic cut-ups they didn't have much to differentiate themselves from the rest of the crowd

Messer Chups are the one's that do that goofy Woo Hoo....Woo Hoo Hoo song on the Vonage TV commercials. That alone is enough to make me look elsewhere for my musical entertainment.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Actually the original, and far supieror version was by the The Rock-A Teens which was recorded way back in 1959.Their version was probably one of the most wacked out songs recorded at the time. The drummer simply goes nuts on those drums,it MUST be heard to be believed. It is often sited as a rockabilly song, but I've seen it on a few instro comps too.Anyway you slice it,the song is a amazing piece of work. The 5678's version leaves the listener to either love it or hate.My vote goes to the original. For anyone that's a fan, I just came across a bunch of new clips from a show in Prague last weekend HERE.

Sure wish they'd make it stateside someday!

They deserve more recognition than they get.
Always working on something - upgrading their back catalogue, touring.

They have a new cd: Surf Riders from the Swamp Lagoon. Available NOW.

I agree with Crumble. They deverve more recognition.

I have seen them twice live and both times I have enjoyed them. Guitar, bass and drums combo. Superb and finesse guitar playing, great looking female bassist and good drummer. I would see them again without any doubt. Great instro and psichobilly experience.

My thoughts exaclty.

Their music spans accross a genre or two but their gig was surfy enough. Very tight trio. The great guitar playing, the bass player and the retro horror/sci-fi projection didn't give me the chance to get bored.

The addtion of a VJ would be great.

Oh, I do have all the CDs they ever released (one of my fav surf bands).
If you like them, also check out 'Messer für Frau Müller' (German Bandname/translated it means 'Knives for Ms. Muller'). Actually the same people, doing some kind of a different surf sound. They call it 'Neo-Surf' - whatever that means. A lot of sampling? Anyway, he DOES play a reverb unit (sorry WR). Just check out the video 'Vincent Price Bible'.
/Edit: I don't care how crappy the bass player is - she looks hot!
They used to live in Cologne and originally they are from russia. I think that's why they picked the german bandname. They changed it to MesserChups later.

Whoooops. Thanks Brian. This is confusing sometimes. Well, maybe someone will listen to their other project now.
