Permalink Best 10" Speaker?

New Topic

Hey, I am looking for a 10" speaker to put into my fender super champ xd. Right now I have the stock speaker which isn't very good.

Any help would be appreciated. Budget is around $100. Thanks in advance.

Well, there's no such thing as the "best 10" speaker". Its a pretty subjective thing. However, for a $100 budget, I can't see going wrong with something like a new Weber 10F150T. I have a pair of the 12" versions. Great speakers. Very Jensen-esque. Great customer service should anything happen to them as well. As an added bonus, Weber is currently having a 15% off sale on most all of their speakers.

Good luck!

Wow, I think that may be just what I'm looking for.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Weber's rule. However, I use 2 x 12" Weber California AlNiCo speakers. The 10" Weber's should be cool...

Ruhar's post nailed it. 10F150T and $25 if you ever need a recone.

+1 on the Webers, although I prefer the Californias for "loud and clean" if that's what you are looking for. However, the magnet is pretty big, so it may or may not fit a SCXD. The AlNiCo one definitely won't fit..I have a 12" one in my Deluxe Reverb which barely fits because the magnet's dust cover is so long. So the one Ruhar suggested may be a better choice for your application.

Here's my mongrel VibroShowman with a pair of 10" ceramic Calis. It kills.

I don't know if they make them anymore, but I put four MojoTone Alnico MP10Rs in my 64 concert amp years ago, and was very happy with the sound. They might be out there used somewhere. They may have been made by Eminance.

The Eminence RamRods have been getting good reviews round the web.

Guys,
Not to through a curve, but I am looking to replace a couple of 10' speakers in my bass cabinet. I am trying to avoid the el cheapo Carvin specials. Any recommendations for 10' bass speaker replacements or will any of these work for both guitar and bass? If so, could I use the same cabinet for my small bass rig, and use a piggyback guitar amp with the same speaker cab if I want to use it for guitar?

Sorry if these is are ignorant questions...
Cheers,
Ted

...I can't see going wrong with something like a new Weber ....Great customer service!

If you buy a Weber ask them to break it in for you, I did, cost me $0.
I put a 12F150T in a Hot Rod Deluxe. No more ice picky treble and flabby bass.

My experience with the Weber 10F150T...

When I bought my 76 Princeton Reverb a few years back it came with a cheapo Radio Shack speaker, so I got a Weber 10F150T which is recommended by Weber for this amp. When I put it in it was very stale and lifeless. I took it out and put an old Oxford from a 69 Super Reverb in and the amp sounded amazing (admittedly I love Oxfords and have them in 4 different old Fenders). After that I put the Oxford in another amp and put a (older) Naylor 1040 speaker in the Princeton Reverb, again it sounded great. I figured the Weber just needed more time to get broken in so I put in in a little 1x10 open back cab and began using it with my Silvertone 1484. It sounds amazing and loud thru that amp, but even now that it's broken in it still sounds dull and lifeless thru the Princeton. The 10F150T also sounded great thru my DRRI before I sold the Deluxe.

I say grab an old Oxford from eBay. These speakers catch some serious flack but I think they sound great, and they were the speaker in so many of those classic Fender amps.

It's kinda good to hear someone else not really thrilled with a Weber, maybe I need to try one of the other styles, I have tried the 12F150 in both the 25 and 50 watt versions, and felt kinda unimpressed, not bad, but no where near the tone of a vintage C12N.

Like I said, speakers are a highly subjective topic. In fact they are the biggest thorn in my side right now. For a general purpose speaker that doesn't have to be the "best" for under $100, I think the 10F150Ts would work for most people with 50 watt amps and below.

That being said, I would rather have CTS' , C12Ns, or JBLs than the Webers no doubt. IMHO, Webers are good speakers if you want something new that is pretty reasonably priced (in most cases) and that come with good post-purchase service (believe me, I've used that service Laughing )

If you want to stretch out a bit and look for a vintage speaker, you may get a much better speaker to your ears. You should just know that there are risks associated with that (e.g., It blows up after a month of use). I sadly am experiencing this right now. Vintage speaker repairs can end up costing much more than the original purchase price in some cases. Caveat Emptor!

I certainly didn't mean to dis, Webers, This is TOTALLY an exercise in subjectivity, with too many variables to make any definitive statement, not to mention how blown out my hearing is... I am fearful that my old jensen will blow soon. I love the way you can order a speaker to your taste at the Weber site, and I probably don't have enough knowledge speaker-wise to make a good choice. I really wish there was a shop with a wall of identical cabs, each with a different speaker in it, that would let you a-b each model, and find the tone that works for me. I have heard Tone Tubbys in a Deluxe reverb like mine and was underwhelmed... my Weber took that speaker to lunch. I have heard awesome CTS speakers from an 62 bassman. Jbls and EVs sound good but I kinda want a little more personality out of a speaker if that makes sense. It is all kinda moot in a band situation, the nuance between a jensen and a weber would not be noticed. At that point I really appreciate the reliabilty that a new weber would bring to the table! And they can't be beat at that price point.

To get back to 10's I am pretty sure a bass 10 inch speaker will sound like crud for guitar.

Ted:

I use 12" in my bass cabs, but here are a couple of brands you might consider:
Eminence makes real nice bass speakers, also JBL. Check out musicians friend and see what's on sale... be sure to choose speakers rated for MORE than your power amp...for example, I choose 400 watt rated Eminence and JBL's for my 300 watt Gallien Kruger. Rember, those bass tones and wavelengths really punish speakers, the attack transients can really shred your voice coils if pushed too hard.
