The Sonics will be playing at The Paramount Theather in Seattle on Friday Oct. 31.

The last time this happened was 40 years ago!

Lucky you guys up in Seattle!

Northwest Favorite, The SONICS Return to
The Paramount Theatre After 40 Years

"Oh, dude, you gotta go get the Sonics! First off, you’re gonna see exactly where the Hives' 'Veni Vidi Vicious' was directly ripped off from. But you’re going to get it at the source. It’s basically the dudes that inspired the Stooges. From ’64 to about ’69, they put out two great records, 'Here Are The Sonics' and 'Sonics Boom'…it’s actually a toss-up between them…probably 'Sonics Boom' (is the better one), because it’s got "Shot Down" on it. But it’s white dudes obsessed with Little Richard, and they create something called punk rock." Jesse Hughes, Eagles of Death Metal

SEATTLE: The Seattle Theatre Group (STG) is proud to present the SONICS with special guest Girl Trouble at 8:00 pm, Friday October 31, 2008 at the Paramount Theatre.

After a 40 years hiatus the SONICS are returning to the Paramount Theatre for their first concert in the Northwest since the band regrouped in 2007. Their last performance in Seattle was at the Paramount Theatre in 1973.

Originating from Tacoma, Washington The SONICS combined classic Northwest-area teen band raunch with early English band grit, relentless rhythmic drive, and unabashed '50s-style blues shouting for a combination that still makes their brand of rock & roll perhaps the raunchiest ever captured on wax.

The SONICS’ original sound, songs and gut wrenching screams from their classic Etiquette Records’ “Here Are The Sonics” and “Sonics Boom” albums attracted international audiences and musicians proclaiming the Sonics as the creator fathers of punk, alternative rock, hard rock and pre-grunge.

In November 2007 the band traveled to New York City for their first concert in 35 years at the Warsaw Forum, 2 nights in Brooklyn, sold out. March 2008 they were invited to London to perform live on the BBC, then headlining 2 incredible shows at the London Forum. Exceptional press and reviews sent the Sonics traveling several times to Europe this spring and summer performing at several festivals and notable venues.

The Sonics Perform on Halloween night and encourage fans to come dressed in a SONICS ‘song title costume’, get noticed, and possibly have your picture taken with the SONICS, or, enter now to win prizes by sending a photo of yourself in costume to the Sonics’ online costume contest at: www.myspace.com/thesonicsboom .
TICKETS: The SONICS with special guest Girl Trouble tickets are $26.50 - $62 (not including applicable fees) and are available online at The Paramount Theatre’s official web site www.theparamount.com, by phone at (206) 628-0888, at The Paramount and Moore Theatre BoxOffices and at Ticketmaster outlets, this show is free of service charge. The Paramount Theatre is located at 911 Pine Street in downtownSeattle.

They played in Seattle on the 28th of September. Couple of us were going to see the Sonics. Saw a different show instead, which turned out to be the greatest thing ever.

I got a golden ticket! Very Happy
It sold out the first day it went on sale.

There was supposedly a Sonics show on the 28th.

And there is no basketball team in Seattle called the Sonics anymore.

Who would have guessed 30 years ago that the only Sonics playing in Seattle in 2008 would be the band?

On Fri nite, The Creepy Creeps played "Shes a witch"
and Sat the Ghastly Ones did "Hes Waiting"
and I thought of Ted and the boys being at the Sonics show.
hope they rocked and you guys all had a great time.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Thanks Jeff!
We had a boss time.

I have played with and seen many of the original 60s bands (? and the Mysterians, the Wailers, the Ventures, Seeds, Zombies, etc, etc) and I have to say that this band, who had more pure cajones than anyone back then (at least from their records) proved themselves to still have those cajones and left me completely happy instead of wishing for more of the original sound or disappointed in the number of spine tingling moments. The entire set was more than anyone could have hoped for some 40 years later. This, plus the fact that they said they would never reunite made for an unbelievable night of pure rock and roll madness.
Three original members---Rob Lind (sax), Larry Parypa (gtr) and Gerry Roslie (organ, piano, and screeeeeamin vocals) played the whole night with a new bass player and drummer (due to death and illness) BUT unlike the earlier shows, the original drummer, Bob Bennett, whose health is apparently not up to doing full shows, sat in for the last two songs. This guy's kick and snare were as much a part of their onslaught as the others contributions and it was awesome to see him up there. The bass player sang some songs so Gerry wouldn't have a blownout voice by the end of the night. Gerry sang most of the choice ones with the bass player covering the Little Richard songs so he could rest his pipes. The guy did a very nice job, didn't bum me out at all. The stand in drummer did a great job and is apparently a PacNW surfing champion.

Little Steven introduced them and sat in on guitar for
Have Love Will Travel and Louie Louie and Kent Morrill of the Wailers came out to sing Dirty Robber and kicked ass. Gerry took it as a challenge and bellowed even stronger the rest of the night.

The only somewhat clunker of the night was an ill-advised cover of "Werewolves of London" for Halloween, but it was saved by Larry playing "Werewolf" by the Frantics (another NW instrumental classic) as an intro.

I'm not this much of a nerd, but found the set list online:

he's waiting
money
cinderella
don't be afraid of the dark
boss hoss
keep a knockin'
the hustler
you've got your heard on backwards
high time
have love will travel
werewolf/werewolves of london
strychnine
lucille
walking the dog
don't believe in christmas
night time is the right time
shot down
dirty robber
psycho
louie louie (the northwest national anthem)
the witch

They were all just on fire.
My other favorite moment was Gerry doing the stroll across the stage during the intro to "Night Time is The Right Time". The other really cool thing was seeing women in their 50s and 60s transform into the teenage girls they used to be dancing in the aisles and flirting with the band after the show.

If you have never heard of the Sonics, it is mandatory garage rock and roll listening. There's a reason that the Ghastly Ones, the Bomboras, the Treblemakers and other surf bands choose their songs to cover for a vocal number to take it over the top. For you surf nuts, it was akin to the Astronauts reforming and playing all the good songs while skipping "Shortnin' Bread" and other lame vocal numbers, and playing them just like they did back then. My faith in rock and roll has been restored.

Great to hear that they didn't disappoint as many reunions of 60's bands usually does.

Thanks for taking the time to write that Ted!

(I get a poster from the show when the hubby gets back.)

Lucky you! They were sold out of the poster before I knew what was happening.

I think maybe I got the short end of the stick, I would of much rather seen the show, but it does take a little of the sting out.
