i was just watching the brian wilson youtube UF posted and in the audio at the very beginning they are recording a tune. this brought to mind a track on an old beach boys album where they put 'little deuce coupe' together part by part.

is there any video showing a surf tune being put together in a recording studio? i think it would be interesting to see how it's done and to hear each part separately before it's all put together as a whole.

just a thought.

I guess the instrumentals in the old days were pretty much recorded live in the studio, and if a band can pull it off it’s the best way to do it, all together that is.

I used to have (cant find it now) a CD of Outakes from the Pet Sounds sessions. Very fascinating it was too - so weird to hear different arrangements or lyrics to songs where the final version is ingrained in your memory. They also throw into perspective that, although Brian was supposed to be the nut in the sandbox at the time, he was well in control of the sessions. You hear him instructing the musicians and explaining how he wants things and he's inspired, confident and focused - a man on top of his game. I guess you don't make a piece of work like that unless you are - regardless of the mythology surrounding him at the time.

also, on one of the beach boys box sets they have a track of 'i get around' minus the vocals. the instruments are very sparse in that tune. it's amazing how the vocals filled it out.
