If you didn't hear, Lloyd Thaxton passed away just last weekend. He was 81. We were very fortunate to have made contact with him and he happily submitted to an interview for "Sound Of The Surf". Here is an article...

Here we are after his interview.

Lloyd, you enriched the lives of millions of teenagers by making rock'n'roll fun and promoted surf music along the way and for that we are grateful. Thank you.

Please share a memory of Lloyd and his show if you have one. I know he touched a lot of kids in the 60's.

I used to love watching the Lloyd Thaxton Show. The lip synching segments were fabulous.
I recently Googled him and read his account of how corporate weasels changed his show and ruined it, after the main advertiser tuned in and decided that he couldn't sell to the target audience of dancing teens. The ratings fell soon after. My girlfriend's father was his accountant for a while but I never saw him after his show went of the air, however I understand he stuck around and made TV from behind the scenes. Good Bye Lloyd.

i used to watch his show also

Hey fellow oldsters...........does this sound right?

"This is the Lloyd Thaxton Show, and I'm Lloyd Thaxton........................................."SO WHAT!"

Just like it was yesterday.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Long before The Lloyd Thaxton Show was syndicated on national TV, he held court here in Los Angeles on independent Channel 13. When he moved to the 5 pm time slot -- 1 hour, 5 days a week, and ALL OF IT was live (!!) -- I started watching him as often as I could after school.

His show was one of the strongest inspirations for my early interest in surf music. He had surf bands on his show very often during 1962-3. I distinctly remember seeing The Chantays and The Challengers, although there were lots of others (interestingly, I don't think Dick Dale/Del-Tones ever appeared).

BTW, he even recorded a surf record -- "Image of A Surfer/My Name Is Lloyd Thaxton" -- for Capitol in 1963. Locally-distributed copies of The Challengers' 2nd album were titled "Lloyd Thaxton Goes Surfing With The Challengers." His name was dropped from the LP's title for nationally-distributed copies.

Lloyd Thaxton was a national treasure, a pioneer of early live television, an important figure to the history of popular culture (and surf music) in this country, and an amazing talent. Besides all of that, he was one helluva nice guy. They don't make 'em like that anymore. They just don't.

I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet and spend time with him and his gracious wife Barbara last year. Like his early TV shows, having had the chance to know him, if only for a short while, will remain a lasting memory with me.
