what we really need is surf band go-go guys. Shocked

Now THAT is an excellent idea! Cheers

uh you girls really want to keep attendance at surf shows down, dont you?
its one thing for a lady to watch go go girls, and put up with it, or some even like it.
but I dont know many guys from the surf crowd that would wanna go see a band with go go guy dancers, it would be absolutely empty bar, not that it isnt now.

Um, with all due respect, the title of the thread is "Surf Band Go-Go-_girls_", so let's not stray into irrelevant dreamworlds, right?

not to sound crass or sexist, but if you're going to have gogo dancers, they must be: a) female (no tuckers, pre-ops, post-ops or "undecided") and, b) they must be generally attractive to the public....mind you, they don't have to be coke-addicted supermodels, but should be generally perceived as being attractive to many people. If you're playing a show attended by 20-somethings, I can assure you, they don't want to see someone that resembles (or in any way reminds them of) their mother or heavyset aunt shaking their junk at the crowd. Sure, if your crowd is aged 45+ and they're into that, go nuts, but if you happened to be 35+ and dating/married/attracted to someone who, objectively, may not be attractive to the people attending your shows, then leave them the f*ck off of the stage. Don't make me start quoting "Bad Santa, " "....sure, I've banged a few fat chicks....," You must first consider the band and the audience and then decide whether or not augment your stage presence with the available "talent." I guess if you're playing the gay pride parade post rally, and you bring in some oiled up dudes wearing banana hammocks, go for it...if that's what you and the crowd are into. you might as well order some banana hammocks with your band's logo on it & make some extra cash at the merch table.

The bottom line is the bottom line - would bringing gogo dancers benefit the overall performance of the band, or detract from it in some way...either financially or aesthetically?

I've always thought go-go dancing is cool (female that is) although I don't think it would suit every surf band. My all-time favorite go-go performance must be the wild bikini dancers of the T.A.M.I. show (who actually had a couple of men among them but fortunately not in bikinis!).

i agree about the T.A.M.I. show, it just all fit together right.

Go Go Dancers: For the record, I don't think scanty dress is an essential feature in dancers accompanying a band. Dancing is kind of essential. Boots are traditional, but they must be hell to dance in.

Male Go Go Dancers: Well, OK, but definitely not scantily clad. No white patent leather boots, either, please.

Dancers Period: With all additional, non-musical elements of a performance you have to strike a compromise between the addition and the music. I tend to prefer a music-heavy compromise, but I think that something additional is a positive, attractive thing, especially if a band is looking for commercial work or perhaps just looking for audiences in commercial venues. For some bands on some occasions dancers might be the thing. For others, gracious MC-ing might be enough.

Serious Surf Music: By all means. I don't think a frat rock approach is essential. It's certainly not the only approach. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with it, either. This is one of the areas where the band kind of has to make its own way.

Fun Surf Music: Always, but there are different kinds of fun. Some are more visceral and some are more intellectual. A few are both.

We've always had a few dancers, planed or unplaned...

But I've always found...

Loud guitars + cute dancers + colorful shirts = happy party crowd

Intense guitars + nobody moves + black shirts = we'er to cool (bored)

uh if you say so sir.

Well, at least people in this place are passionate about what they do!

Personally, I find with dancers that a little goes a long way. I wouldn't mind having dancers for some songs scattered throughout the set but not on every song.

I'm sure there are lots of wonderful dancers out there, but it isn't my particular cup of tea, that's all. If I'm listening, I go for the music - not for beer and noise. Let the music be good and well played and let that be the heart of the show.

Periodic additions are welcome, but let it mostly be about the music for me.

Frankly, until you walk a mile in her boots, you shouldn't critique any dancers out there.

Why not? That question is asked without sarcasm, merely with curiosity.

Do you have to do a task before you can have an opinion about how it should be done (or if)? I can't do construction, but I can tell if I like how my house is built or not.

BlueStingRaye
We don't critique your playing...or do we?

Probably Very Happy And why the heck not?

Nothing more tacky than Go Go Dancing. Why can't the bands just play music and put on an engaging, interesting live show? Not saying that the bands that use them are hiding something or desperate, by any means. I just do not see the point.

Now, the real question is "Would Carl Wilson have used gogo dancers if he were a surf guitarist?" Twisted Evil

I'm all about seeing a great band play, but if there is good looking, go go dancers, then I'm not going to be watching the band.
sorry.
