Anyone know the story on KFWB's "Battle of the Surfing Bands" and similar items? Has it always been somewhat strangely but not entirely mislabelled as to content?
There have actually been four such comps from Del-Fi that have confused people for years because of the track variations. Besides the three 1963 releases tied in with radio stations -- KFWB, KPOI, and KYA "Battle of the Surfing Bands" -- there was also the 1994 Del-Fi CD "reissue" of the '63 KFWB album that WAS NOT an exact reissue of that earlier album . All are slightly different in terms of tracks and titles of the tracks as noted on the LP/CD covers and labels.
In the new 4th edition of my "Illustrated Discography of Surf Music, 1961-1965," I devote an entire Appendix to these releases and their variations. It's all spelled out in the new book, which ought to be available by late October. Availability and ordering info will be noted on my website (www.johnblair.us).

Thank you, John! It's one of those '94 CDs I must have. I have the 3rd edition of The Illustrated Discography, which has been very helpful. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this new edition! October sounds great!

a great way of getting friends into surf music
Just bought "when i grow up to be a man" (surf comp) and a 33rpm 7" Aqua Vista "Gentleman Racer" (8 tracks) from: http://www.fuzzpop.co.uk/
very cheap and freepost worldwide. Fuzzpop Records are closing down.
