Well, I think I am sold! I am so amazed that this set is so affordable, yet the quality is excellent. I guess it is a Gretsch, what more can we say?

I recorded some songs on one at my friend's home studio. It's probably the best new kit for the money. Maybe one of the best new kits period.

Which set did you use was it the Jazz set or the MOD, I am really interested in the 22" BD with the mod kit. I was reading some reviews, and this bass drum is suposed to be a monster._

Jazz kit. I was leery of the longer BD, but once I got over it, I have to say, it sounded good and big for a "jazz" kit. The 22" BD should be a monster based on this. Good for your John Bonham impersonations.

I think Im going to go for the MOD kit, I am used to playing a big Kick, I have a 22x18 Maple Sonor Hilite, and that thing will blow the Garage door off. Also the Silver sparkle racing stripes I must say are pretty cool too. I'm planning on selling this to get the gretsch set. My current set is such a Mix and Match, it will be worth the Sacrifice.

Dane, the drummer of my band the Madeira, used his Gretsch Catalina set for the recording of our new album Carpe Noctem - though he's got a VERY expensive, top-of-the-line Yamaha. The Gretsch definitely has a more authentic sixties sound, looks great and it's a lot more portable!

Here's another big thumbs up for Gretsch Catalina! They really got it right with that set.

Smile The Catalina Club Jazz is a really good kit. My brother and I tested this lil'bad boy out at the Guitar Center and we where surprised of the good sound that was coming from it. It had some Evans drum heads. And it just looks nice.
BTW does anyone here know anything about that Gretsch kit that Mel Taylor uses in the Japan 65' footage? I couldn't find that kit anywhere, not even http://vintagesnaredrums.com/

Just wanted to point out to everyone who is considering getting a Gretsch Catalina Kit, Musicians Friend is having a "blowout" sale on them.

Not a bad price in my opinion.

I am at the point of decision time, for purchasing a new kit. I have narrowed it down to 2 choices.

Gretsch Catalina Mod Black Stripe on silver.
6 1/2 x 14 Snare Drum;
8 x 12 Tom Tom;
14 x 16 Floor Tom;
20 x 22 Bass Drum;
Musicians Friend $499

Or

Gretsch Catalina Jazz Rustic Pearl

5 x 14 Snare Drum;
8 x 12 Tom Tom;
14 x 14 Floor Tom;
14 x 18 Bass Drum;

Musicians Friend $630 something

Both Seen Here.

What I am asking is this: From the stand point of a surf drummer, which would be the best kit to purchase. Economically the Mod kit would be a great deal, but is that 22" BD a bit of over kill. I am looking for a more classic sound. I have not heard a bad word about either of these, I am just looking for some advice. Please Help!!

Hey Tonetti,
That Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit is the same setup that I got.
In White Marine Pearl though. I only paid $400 for it a Guitar Center.
In other words, if you're thinking about getting that, you might want to try checking your local Guitar Center and see if that deal is still going on.
Just thought I'd give you a heads up on that.

I'm not much of a drummer, so I can't say much for one compared to the other in terms of a classic sound. I can say though, that I love my Jazz kit.
Just got Remo Fiberskyn heads on it, sounds great.

Very Happy Has anyone ever ReWrapped a drum before? Just curious cuz it seems like its harder than retolexing a Cab.

I recovered an abused Slingerland kit a long time in red sparkle...it was not too difficult.

I found a couple of shots of that kit...

I'd pick the Catalina jazz although I'd bet they're both good kits.

Im worried about the bass drum size 18" just seems too small. What is your opinion? As for the heads, the stock heads will be tossed right away.

This is the set I'm leaning towards, I found the same set with either Black diamond pearl or red Pearl finishes. Very nice looking.

I like the sound of the 18", it's a very small tight sound. Not the sound everyone wants though. I just use a little less dampening in the kick so it's not entirely drowned out while playing. Also keep in mind though, I am a pretty hard kicker... for what it's worth.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with either kit. If you want to be a little more prominent, I'd go with the larger kick. If you want it more even with the rest of the drums, go with the smaller one.

(Again, all I say can easily be dismissed due to me not being a drummer. I've also not had a chance to play this drum set with anyone. It's just set up in a corner in my bedroom for me to practice on, until I get a bit more steady in me tempo.)

So... I went ahead and purchased a set of Gretsch Catalina MOD drums today, I got the ones in the Black Diamond Pearl finish, I am really stoked!! I also risked a sure divorce situation, and bought a New "A" Zildian 21" Sweet ride, and a new Set of 14" "A" Zildjian New Beat Hi Hats. OOPS!! Sorry Honey!! I just Couldnt resist! Cool

They should be here Monday or Tuesday, Ill post some pics!

I've got a drummer buddy dying for a set of these DMS acrylics, but at $3500 minus the hardware it will never be. Don't know how they'd sound for surf but they look pretty damn cool!
