Permalink Eastwood guitars?

New Topic

WR had mentioned this brand at the "Gretsch for surf..." thread, and was wondering if anybody hear has some hands-on experience with Eastwood guitars? I'd posted a query about 'em, at the Home Recording dot com BBS Guitars & Basses forum, and there was quite a few replies that they're fairly mediocre guitars. There are several Eastwood models I'd consider, especially one that seems like it'd be a good surf guitar: Hi-Flyer (surf guitar?); Savannah DLX (surfabilly); Delta-6 (for other indulgences); Sidejack Baritone (spaghetti western/spy/b-movie sound); Hi-Flyer Bass (project possibilities).

If it's possible that these would be decent sounding guitars, I'll be looking to buy the above mentioned models, as I'm able to. Otherwise, I'll continue to collect more Fenders, and possibly another Ibanez or an Epiphone or two, along with a couple of Gibsons.

I have played most of their guitars, and they're not bad. I found finish flaws on most I played, but nothing too bad. The pickups actually don't sound that bad, and the necks aren't that bad either, pretty smooth and comfortable to me, the drawback to most of them is the choice of body woods...the cool surf reissues have basswood bodies....the bigger ticket Eastwoods like the Airlines, Supros, Savannahs etc. are pretty cool. They have mahogany or maple bodies and have a much better overall feel to them. They just feel more substantial...you know what I mean? If I could get one used for a steal, I'd jump on it. Oh yeah..the Burns trem ain't too bad with a good set-up either. Anyways, best of luck in your gear search..Keary

I'm dying to hear a review of their Hopf Saturn reissue. It just looks like such a sweet guit...

The Disasternauts

I played one of the Saturns, and it is my favorite of their line-up....It just has a sound unlike anyhting else....I also grew up listening to The Cure, so that might have something to do with it Laughing

The Exotics were using Eastwood Mosrite clones during their show at Exotica 2005. Guitarist Paul Wall joined the Yahoo Group after this show, and I remember a few people asked him about the Eastwoods. I will have to go back and look, but I remember him saying they were decent for cheap guitars, but they had a lot of tuning problems with them that night.

There are some photos of that gig in the photos section.

Keeping one in tune shouldn't be a problem, at least to be willing to upgrade any hardware that could be better. I'd seen it mentioned, in another thread, about folks upgrading their Standard Stratocasters with a few better American Stratocaster parts, and I wouldn't be beyond upgrading tuning machines, if need be. The only Eastwood model I'd likely change the pickups on would be the Hi-Flyer bass, which when I looked at that one, I couldn't help but think that TV Jones ThunderTrons should perk up the sound of that, quite nicely.

Hey - I just bought a Tokai Hummingbird reissue - this guitar has now been transferred into the Eastwood brand line, and I assume it would still be pretty much the same (seeing as the Tokai brand one was also made in Korea). I think this is a really excellent guitar - excellent build quality, great sounding P90 type pickups, deep but crisp sound (I use the middle position, both pickups). Medium weight, excellent vibrato system, tuners.
