Permalink Do you use your thumb to fret barre chords?

Jesus wept! This got weird. Turn away for a second and all hell breaks loose.

Anyhow, (is it too late to re-rail this miscarriage of a thread?) I try to keep my thumb on the back of the neck as instructed in my classical guitar course in college. Pictures of me playing reveal that I got my thumb kinda crawling over the top sometimes like the hack I am. Though I am not fretting notes with it.

Obama?

Reverend?

Kittens and bunnies?

Canada?

WTF?

You gotta have sense of humor to be around here for too long, I think. Probably a good thing.

Oh yeah, the thumb fretting thing. I'd forgotten about that. I've tried it periodically, but I can never nail more than the low E and A that way. For me, it seems less troublesome to just keep using the finger. I noticed Masoner using the thumb effectively -- and apparently effortlessly -- on Surf Rider, but I can never make it work to any worthwhile extent. Perhaps in another 20 years, when I've figured out more than one genre, I'll find a use for this technique. Sad

Now see here, I like kitties, bunnies, barfing dogs and reverb toasters as much as the next man, but...Oh, what the hell -- bring it on!

Wow. This all has really taken a turn towards the ugly. I apologize for any part I may have played in that, although my intent initially was merely to defend a new member, and what I thought was a fairly noncontroversial statement, from petty attacks such as this:

zak
However I do find it to be an interesting mixture of annoying and amusing when I see really shitty advice being handed out like candy by armchair experts.

I would have thought that a forum dedicated to surf guitar would be a pretty open community given that surf rock is a pretty narrow niche. And for the most part, I have found most members to be so. But I have also found that some folks have no interest in being welcoming to new members or accomodating of points of view that differ from their own. Not that everyone must agree on something, but certainly a point of view should be able to be expressed without encountering snide hostility.

And for those who would say, "Well, have tougher skin," I would say, "OK, but how about taking your own advice as well." If you can't handle criticism yourself (or hell, even a differing opinion), then don't be so free handing it out.

Sean

Well that was fun.
