If anyone here knows who "Wes Montgomery" is
I would hope so!
FenderShowman63
I was just wondering if the way he plays guitar is a proper technique? He uses his thumb. I'm pretty sure its not. He probably just picked up the guitar and started to teach himself like that.
Wes had an unorthodox picking style, and it is definitely responsible for his distictive tone. That is an idiosyncratic technique for sure, although Wes was an influential enough player to inspire a whole bunch of other guitarists to imitate his thumb style.
Yeah man a lot of folks copy his style, I love it. And his tone is great, although he would sound really good even with out an amp. Here's another cool video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOm17yw__6U&feature=related also a very good song by Thelonious Monk.

What rock do you live under Rockfish, where it is acceptable to bash an entire country when you can't think of anything intelligent to say. How would you explain your opinions and attitude?

Wes is godly that's for sure. Oh and thanks rockfish for further cementing the American ethnocentric stereotype abroad.

I am so glad the Ventures got in the hall of fame. Now they can go away and die and take their suck ass music with them! I fart in their general direction.
So how are your showman clones coming along? Did you purchase a hammer and some wood screws yet?
He decided to make deluxe reverbs instead, and i stand by my ventures comment. I feel sick just thinking about their music.
The good news is, i just bought a new gretsch!!!! Once i get some play time on it i will come back here and tell you guys how much better it is than a jazzmaster.
Good day,,eh!

Wow... I'm going to help you out. You are insulting Zak and myself for being rude. First off, you insulted all of Canada and then you said he had dumb ass opinions. Poor attitude, most certainly for Zak and myself. I think you will find we are quite likable people and fun to chat with if you joined us in the chat room. Back to the point. You have stooped to the same level as Zak and I, only we don't insult nationalities and call people dumb asses.
People, Zak is just one hell of a debater, not an asshole. Also, he is right most of the time. The man has a ton of experience and really knows his gear. As for me, sorry that I do not tell you that you bought great gear when you actually bought gear that I consider to be inferior. That is my opinion and I suggest you back your opinion up instead of thinking I'm an asshole. Disagreeing on guitar gear doesn't mean we are attaching you as a person. I'm sure 90% of you are quite lovely in person.

Not yet, I'll check it out when I get home tonight. My fav. Wes stuff comes from his Riverside years, that's for sure. I'm not a huge fan of the Verve stuff although I love "Smokin' At the Half-Note" and much of "Movin' Wes". His version of Caravan on that album is my favorite interpretation of that tune by far!

I would say that Zak is a "Master Debater" No but seriously, I've talk to both Jake and Zak on the Chat Room plenty of times. And I can say that they are both really good guys, so now lets all just relax and go back to watching the "Dale Jr." video

By definition, lay opinions don't need to be backed up, which is probably why you are so loose with yours. In any event, there are many ways to express an opinion without being, how to put it, pretensious.

Amen. Four new pages on this in one day? This thread has taken SG101 to a whole new level of pettiness.

I don't care if you guys tussle in a civil manner about earth shattering topics like picks, pickups, and hand positions. But comments like the above aren't in line with the core values of this site.
One of the highlights of the last few years was my trip to Toronto, and I received nothing but good vibes from Canada and all the Canadian SG101'ers I met. So I consider the above statement a total insult. And yes I even met Zak. Zak can be a bit blunt on the forums, but he's a hell of a guitar player, a super nice guy actually, he knows his stuff, and I'm proud to call him a friend. Am I taking sides on this particular issue? No, I am staying out of it. I just want to point out that you need a certain degree of thickness in your skin to hang out in forums like this. You should not be surprised or annoyed when people suddenly present opinions counter to your own.
Meeting forum people in real life gives you a whole new perspective on things, as I learned from my trip to the SG101 convention. It is far to easy to anonymously throw a big FU to some clown on a forum, sitting in your underwear at your laptop in a dark room. But if you actually meet them and see where they are coming from, it changes everything. Its great we can all meet and talk like this on the site, but you have to give the benefit of the doubt to people a lot more. I struggle with this myself. I also encourage more people to join us in the IRC chat room. Some of the best conversations and exchanges about surf music and gear go on in there.
I'm rambling so I will stop.
