DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP!

image

It is like a 80's TV show, with N. Edwards playing a Telecaster without vibrato, no reverb, and he's dressed like a cowboy. The rest of the band look like characters from a Knight Rider episode. Yes, they play the classics, but this is not surf! This does not sound like surf, and this does not look like surf!

Well, I deserve it. I saw the Les Paul in the cover and I bought it anyway Rolling Eyes

It's probably not their fault. They may have been contractually bound to produce something against their artistic will. Excrement occurs...

Is it from their 80's reunion?

This is actually a bootleg. The Ventures have said they want it removed from the market.

While the Ventures (one of my favorite bands) have been an inspiration to many surf players, and have provided a lot of material that surf bands have adopted, the Ventures never claimed to be a surf band. Nokie IS kind of a cowboy, well.... he's half indian anyway, and he used to play with Buck Owens. Not that there is anything wrong with that Wink

Well, I was pretty dissappointed ;)

...they never claimed to be a surf band, but I cannot find any difference between this

and the chantays, the pyramids, the surfaris and so on.
Maybe thet were not exacly surf, but kind of.

These 80s ventures have nothing to do with a surf band! definitely not!

Pd. I have nothing against cowboys, but here in Europe, we find them funny / kitsch Smile

Thank GOD that Nokie left country and joined The Ventures!! He may have never have had the exposure he so well deserves and his one-of-a-kind versatility, playing styles, and mastery of stringed intruments may have gone largely unnoticed. But hey, who else could pull off surf guitar music with a telecaster and not get splattered with tomatoes from the audience?

You can't complain about the lack of reverb. Listen to the '65 Japan concert. It is bone dry. Still good mind you! but bone dry. I would blame the 80's DVD on it being the 80's. The 60's sound was not popular during that time period. Just be glad Nokie isn't trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen or something even more eighties.

From what I know, this concert has also been released as Most Famous Hits / The Ventures Golden Hits:

I agree. And even if this dvd is very 80's, I still can enjoy Nokie's playing. Bob Bogle didn't play in that concert because of some minor skiing accident, therefore the bass guitar was played by Paul Warren. But Nokie, Mel and Don are there.

It's go-go, not cry-cry.
