I had a Fender Dual Professional that came with Vintage 30's...it didn't sound at all "surfy" to me. That was the most 'un-Fender' sounding Fender amp I ever played through. I didn't keep it very long, although in retrospect I probably should have swapped the V30's for a pair of D-120F's or Weber Californias. Conversely, the stock Eminence speakers in a reissue Twin Reverb I used to have sounded great. I should have kept that amp.

Speaker selection probably depends on the amp to some degree, but I'm not a fan of Vintage 30's for surf based on my admittedly limited experience with them.

I am not at all anti-Celestion...I have a pair of Celestion G12M greenbacks in my '65 Bandmaster (my 1965 Christmas present...thanks, mom and dad!) which does sound very surfy, way better than the original Oxfords. Also used to have a silverface Deluxe Reverb with a single greenback that was awesome. Mitch with the Surge has it now.

For a while Eminence had a pretty shabby reputation (partially based on them supplying very mediocre speakers for Fender for a while) but I think they make some excellent speakers.

I competely agree. I have 2 Eminence Legend 151's that I bought because the price was right, and they've turned out really great with my Red Knob Showman. I'll never shy away from Eminence Speakers again.

I looking at putting them in my 69 pro reverb which is getting overhauled and blackfaced. heres the deal, i like surf and rockabilly and find the amp breaks up pretty good and can cover a little of both styles. I have blue lable 35w fenders in their now. I have read alot of posts on TGP on both, basically the neo is warm with a big bottom and the v30s are a more vintage sound, more mids. At least thats the way im interpretting them. One major difference is the 12 inch neos are 100w and v30 are 35. Im kind of leaning to the neos but wonder about a 40w amp pushing 2 100w speakers if it will breakup.

Go with Weber speakers. They're really well built, affordable, have great tone, and are very reliable. Celestion and modern Jensen speakers are not really suited for surf music, in my opinion.

I have experience with Jensen Neo's and Im not fond of them. they have a very dry dull sound too them, and even with one of them (100watts) it's impossible to get it to break up. it's also a very efficient speaker, making you gave to turn down volume, hence not bring the best out of the amp. imo.

unless you wanna buy a pair, in that case they are the shit

I have two 12" Jenson Neo's in my twin and they rock!! I much prefer them over the speakers that came with the amp. You may also want to check out Tone Tubby's too....i love those speakers and have a 12" hempcone in my Blues JR.

I currently have all sorts of speakers in a bunch of different cabinets and combo amps. I have no problems with the V-30's. In one of my small 2-12 closed back bassman/bandmaster cabs they sound fine. I do prefer the Stock Fender Twin replacement speaker as they are somewhat brighter than the V-30's. I keep one cab over at Sticks' for Surge! practice, it's the one currently loaded with the Twin speakers. At moderate volumes it sounds really good.

None of the 2-12 cab/combo's will keep up with the 2-15 EV-15L loaded cabs. We played outside at Trader Vics today and once again I was amazed at how great that cabinet sounds outside. I recently acquired another 2-15 Showman cab that was loaded with Eminence 15's. It sounds pretty damn good too. I am just about to finish up a 1-12 tone ring cab to go with my 62 Bandmaster head. I am going to load it with a PV Black Widow 1201-4. This ought to be interesting.

The thing I find most interesting about myself is that out of all the stuff I have lying around, I go out to play with one of three different amp/speaker combinations:

68 Dual Showman Reverb head / 2-15 EV-15L cab
65 Bandmaster / 2-12 K-120 cab
62 Bandmaster / 2-12 D-131 cab

I do love the way the Bandmasters start to compress and break up when you push 'em. They really become one with the guitar. But if I feel the need to "take no prisoners," or if I have to play outside, there is only one choice...............

I have a 2x15" Jensen neodymium cab that I really like, maybe even more than my Dual Showman cab. The thing with the JBL cab is that one night it'll sound great and then the following show it'll sound awful. The neodymium cab sounds great every time and my back is very grateful.

I'm with Eddie on the Electro-Voice EVM or "L" series speakers. They sound incredible and they are pretty much bulletproof. Unfortunately, they are no longer being produced, so new ones are almost impossible to find.

My favorite currently available speaker to get a JBL-ish surf sound is the Weber California Series. I have three Fender amps with these speakers...one has a single 12" (Alnico), one has 2-10's, and the last has a single 15". However, the most toneful surf combo amp of the lot is a '63 brown Fender Pro with a JBL D-130F. Nothing else sounds like a good D-130F cranked up.

With that said, speakers are a very subjective thing, and what one person likes, another may hate. It appears that there are several really good "surfable" speakers out there now (Eminence, Jensen, Weber, etc.) I just stopped looking any further when I discovered Weber.

this is a harder thing than i've imagined, you cant test all the speakers your looking at and yait is very subjective. that said i think im going to take Zaks advice and go with eminence speakers, and there cheap.
