I've been lurking for a couple of months now and finally decided to join up. I guess this is kind of a dumb question, but I'm having a real hard time doing that fairly fast muted picking thing where you run down the entire length of the fretboard. You know, that do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do with the cool reverb echoing off of it.
I've never been an extremely fast picker and aside from a lack of practice I've blamed most of it on being a lefty who plays righty. I can't seem to put more than 3-5 steady picks in a row together before I get tangled in the strings or thrown off. I'm not ever expecting to get up to Dick Dale speed but it would be nice if I could do the classic Surf run down the strings. Does anybody have any tips? Should I be trying to grip the pick closer to the tip or farther out? Do I just barely want to touch the strings? I usually choke up on the pick and dig in fairly deep when I play leads. I can sort of accomplish this feat if I turn the pick slightly sideways but I completely lose the sound if I do that: it turns into more of a scraping sound instead of the thuds and my 1964 Reverb Unit doesn't like that too much
Thanks a lot!
