thx to all the bands, THE LONG GOODBYES, The TarantinosNYC, THE
OUTPATIENTS, THE 9th WAVE, THE OCTOMEN and SURF BELOW ZERO for helping
me put on a great SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's on AUG 23.

special luv goes out to SURF BELOW ZERO for jumping in and filling the
slot left open by THE NEBULAS, and for working with me to switch their
set time last minute to accomodate THE OCTOMEN

and thx to everyone who came out to support the grow and groove on the
sounds of the surf

SHINDIG review from "Lucid Culture"

Later in the evening we ended up at Otto's if only for the reason
that it's close to Union Square (and vastly preferable to the odious
Doc Holliday's, where a troupe of aging fratboys and sorority girls
were whooping along to Glory Days by Springsteen, rudely jostling
anyone within arm's length and spilling their drinks). By a stroke
of good fortune, this was one of Unsteady Freddie's surf music
nights. For the second time in about a week, 9th Wave reminded why
they're so highly regarded in the surf music scene, and reminded
also how eerily similar they are to Randi Russo. She's about as surf
as they are indie rock, but the two acts share a sardonic humor: 9th
Wave guitarist Mike "Staccato" Rosado plays his lightning-fast,
pointillistic Dick Dale-inflected melodies with an edge and a bite
that can be either gleefully sarcastic or burn with an undercurrent
of anger and disappointment: one would think that someone this good
deserves to command a bigger stage than the one at Otto's on a
Saturday night. But that's New York, 2008. In yet another weird
coincidence, they'd also played the Coney Island boardwalk about a
week ago, and their set was pretty much the same as what they played
there with the exception of their best song of the night, a tensely
burning, midtempo minor-key tune. As they reached the end of their
show, one of the entourage at the bar had reached her limit, so it
was time to call it a day. Imagine this happening just about
anywhere else.

_FYI:
David Peel, a long-standing NYC Hippie / Icon who performed with and was
produced by John Lennon & Yoko, was at Unsteady Freddie's Surf Night last
Saturday. He was VERY impressed with the music and the whole night.
He sat right up front and took several pictures. David said that the music
"added to the magic and musical history of the Lower East Side".

write-up about OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD from the website, LUCID CULTURE,

Unsteady Freddie

_Otto’s Shrunken Head

14th St. just west of Ave. B, south side of the street

L to 1st Ave. or 4/6/N/R to Union Square and walk east or take the M14 bus to Ave. B

Formerly Barmacy. A few years after they’d bought the place from the woman who owns Beauty Bar, the owners realized that since this place has a tiki bar theme, maybe they should have surf music. Wow, what a concept! Now the little room in the back of this long, narrow bar has Unsteady Freddie’s multi-band surf extravaganza the first Saturday of every month, which is consistently excellent. Otherwise, it’s a mix of retro styles: rockabilly, blues and punk, along with the occasional indie band. This place likes monthly residencies: rockabilly the last Saturday of the month, Tuesday is goth night, second Saturday of the month is garage rock, etc. The music room is small, quite loud and the sound is pretty bad, although it’s fine for instrumental music. Beer is cheap (but don’t get taken in by their enormous but still ridiculously overpriced tiki cocktails, which are nothing more than frathouse punch). Some of the waitstaff are oldschool nonchalant; others are snooty and rude. This place draws an older crowd, a lot of former CBGB/Continental hangers-on, although on the weekends the yuppie puppies invade (you can tell who’s from out of state by who’s drinking from the giant goblets that look like the Statue of Liberty’s head). The Nazi factor depends on who’s working the door. Women should be aware that this place seems to have modeled itself on CBGB’s, at least as far as cleanliness is concerned; you might want to make a pit stop somwhere else before you get here.

due to the scary weather reports, THE HEAVIES from Ohio have decided not to make the trip East to Otto's tonight for the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG

last minute addition: The TarantinosNYC

God Bless 'em!!

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

http://www.facebook.com/unsteady.freddie

thanks to all the surf fans who came out as the remnants of Hurricane Hannah swept thru the NYC metro area

and kudos to all the bands who also trekked out, and played magificent sets at the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG last night at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD

we opened with the Pop/Trad sounds of MR. ACTION & THE BOSS GUITARS who were in their usual fine form!

next up, The Tarantinos/NYC who filled in yesterday afternoon for last night's show -- and poor Patty, our there with laryngitis, but giving her all; we are sorrt THE HEAVIES could not make the journey East from Ohio...but given the weather being what it was....don't blame 'em; The TarantinosNYC improve with age, no doubt about it

THE COFFIN DAGGERS, complete with muitimedia B-movie clips playing behind them, mesmerized the crowd (what else is new?)

and last but definitely not least, EL MUCHACHO, gave one heck of a performance....I think they started like 145 am, and had the place on its feet dancin' and boppin' to their unqiue brand of psychedelic surf

I am filled with gratitude for the spirit of the surf rock community

Summer 2008 is now a thing of the past

But not before we sent it off on its merry way with an END-OF-SUMMER SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD this past Saturday, September 20th

We had a blast, and the crowd was dancing from start to finish

I shot 4 videos, they are all up now on YouTube, fully processed, and thought I would share them with everyone here

Hope you enjoy 'em

Comments are always welcome

Thanks to all the bands, and the staff at OTTO's, and the surf fans, old and new, who came out to be part of the scene

God Bless Otto's Shrunken Head for letting me put together a monthly live instrumental surf event, the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG....and special thanks go out to the loyal fans of the soiree who come back month after month to celebrate with me and the rotating selection of great bands that perform there

October 4th was no exception! THE SUPERTONES, New York City's longest-running surf combo, led by TIM SULLIVAN, NEVER DISAPPOINTS with their real-deal take on trad surf

Here they are performing I SURF IN BLACK, I video I shot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oCFq0GNfEM

their websites:
http://www.myspace.com/thesupertonesnyc
http://www.myspace.com/11884054

MATTY LIOT & THE BIG UP from Sag Harbor Long Island followed, with a KILLA set of instro, and dashes and splashes of rock, blues (really dug their CREAM covers!). The BIG UP, with MATTY, are a wonderful power trio. Gotta get these guys back ASAP!!

Here they are performing a medley, I guess you could call it, of APACHE and GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0zqTCq6oT0

their website:
http://www.myspace.com/mattyliotandthebigup

Third band featured were, from Rhode Island, the wonderfully energetic 3-piece band, THE CHASERS. Diggin' the new threads! They, too, always get up and stage, and blow everyone away; no exception this past Saturday. Here they are performing RED PENNY, a new tune, from a video I shot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0gE20CXYUk

Website for THE CHASERS:
http://www.myspace.com/surfchasers

We closed things out with a band of great guys who have come a long way, STRANGE BUT SURF. Now keep in mind they didn't go on until about 1:30 am, but they had EVERYONE in the room (and it was still crowded, no less) up on their feet groovin' along. A highlight of their set was when they were doing the BEACH BOYS' classic, 'SURFIN' USA', and I prodded the CHASERS to get up and sing the vocals -- all 3 guys on 1 mic -- great stuff!. Here is a video I shot of them doing, YELLOW JACKET:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SrUbA2_xRI

Again, mucho appreciato to everyone for a killer rave-up SURF-ROCK SHINDIG!!

NOTE:

STARTING WITH THE FEBRUARY 2009 SURF-ROCK SHINDIG at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD,

all shows will start at 9 pm instead of 10 pm

last band will go on at Midnight and MUST be finished by 1 am (instead of the 1 am start and 2 am finish)

this is due to noise-level and late-hour complaints from neighborhood tenants

the NOVEMBER and DECEMBER SURF-ROCK SHINDIGS will go on, as scheduled, with a 10 pm start

bands will have to be more cooperative in ensuring that each set starts at the top of the hour

for my Birthday SURF-ROCK SHINDIG on January 3rd 2009, the music will kick off at 6 pm; the final band, THE VIVISECTORS' GULAG TUNES (see separate thread) will go on at MIDNIGHT, and be finished by 1 am

thx to everyone for their understanding, patience, and help

UNSTEADY FREDDIE

http://www.facebook.com/unsteady.freddie

OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD was, yet again, the scene of a great party -- that being last night's SURF-ROCK SHINDIG
image

I have been dealing with horrific upper respiratory health issues since the this past Wednesday, but that didn't keep me from getting to Otto's to host the show

things kicked off with MISTER NEUTRON...and, as is their style, they delivered a blistering set
image
image

we then had the pleasure of hearing (and seeing!) a great mixed variety set from THE TARANTINOS/NYC....
image

third, from N.J., and at a SHINDIG for the first time, THE COPPERTONES; they had everybody dancing (including yours truly, despite my awful health) -- I was very impressed with their presentation (diggin' those De Pinto's!!)
image

here is a video of them performing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZxmk96Io4s

and we closed things out with the powerhouse trio, THE OCTOMEN, led by RATTLESNAKE RALPH
image
image

I have a video I took of them as well:

PAULIE TARANTINO & RATTLESNAKE RALPH:

thanks again to everyone who attended, and some love goes out to OTTO's (Nell, who is pictured below, and Steve) for letting me do the SHINDIGs on a regular basis!!

with gratitude, and surf-beat bliss,
