The Torquays 1994-2008
I answered an ad in the local want ad rag called "The Recycler" for a drummer for a surf band that a guy named Jerry was putting together because he had sent a demo tape to a local venue called "The Coach House"...and they wanted him to have his band open for "Spirit" and "Arthur Lee and Love"...only problem was...he had no band! We rehearsed for a couple of months (all surf covers) and played the gig...wearing the matching red shirts that I had picked up at a local Target store earlier in the day. It was amazing to see and hear the reaction of the crowd when they saw us take the stage in our matching outfits. It was a good investment of $9.95 a piece (on sale)...we then went on to wear matching red jackets, play matching fender guitars through matching blonde fender amps!...

I picked up my first Torquays CD from Steve (I often had him set up my guitars). The drums were sooooooo good.

The band (and the great shows) will be missed...Thanks, Duff

Commander Fo!
Were you in the Aquabats line-up when they opened for Man or Astroman?...in Hollywood at the Roxy, I think....awesome show!

...and thanks for the kind words!

I left the band earlier because I couldn't tour (left on a good note). So I was there, but didn't play.

MOAM puts on such great shows!

Commander Fo, What Aquabats albums did you play on?

Klas
Daytonas 1989-1997

sniff nostalgia I loved the (Swedish) Daytonas, but was never able to find more than a couple songs by them, from various compilations. Apparently two - Go! and Surfer's Deal. I was thinking it was three for some reason.

Jon
Commander Fo, What Aquabats albums did you play on?

The first one..."The Return Of".

First surf band (mid 60's) was Rip Curl..we played in the San Gabriel Valley, CA...our other guitarist Paul had a surf instro and Beach Boy vocal band about the same time in Chicago named The Surfbards

We had some additional songs on other comps as well. Check out the Instromania website for a pretty complete Daytonas discography:

The Surge! was preceded in "surf" by The X-Rays. Here is a pix of the original lineup of the X-Rays plus one. We played our first show in the Spring of '97 as a four piece group with keyboards and no second guitarist.

As we were unloading the van in front of Twain's in Decatur for that first show, local area guitarist Chad Proctor,(who had played with Atlanta surf band "Fistful of Surfboards," the year before), just happened to be driving by Twain's and glanced over just at the point we were unloading the blonde amps. He jumped on the brakes and circled around to see what in-the-hell was going on a Twain's. (I had remembered him from a picture of his group playing a battle of the surf bands at Dotties during the Atlanta Summer Olympics in '96 with the Penetrators and I think, Thee Phantom 5ive) published in the Creative Loafing).

After a quick round of introductions we offered him the opportunity to join us and he jumped right in. This pix was made several weeks later at our second ever outing which was "back at Twain's by popular demand."

Left to right: Chad Proctor, Randy Wilt, Kevin Jolly, Nathan Fink, and Eddie Katcher.

This original line up didn't last the year out as I remember with a mass exodus of relatively uninspired X-Rays dudes. However it wasn't long before we were again hitting on all cylinders with new members Jack "WoodyJ" Booth, Ricky Lewis, Chris "Nick Zurn" Nicoll and Mike "Mitch" Mitchell. Ricky was ultimately superseded by current Surge! drummer Link Ladshaw who, like a lot of my buds has played in this band more often that not.

We have had a great time. 2015 marks the 18th year we have been fortunate enough to continue playing what we love, surf and instrumental rock. Lucky enough to perform from Orlando, FL to Indianapolis, IN, from Virginia Beach, VA to Huntington Beach, CA and lots of places in between. Who would have thunk it? I can't think of anything I would rather be doing.

Surf music is a great family.

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Well, 50+ years later, I'm still in my first surf band, The Mariners.

We were high school friends in Murfreesboro (near Nashville) Tennessee who shared a passion for The Ventures and the surf music that managed to find it's way on the local airwaves. So in 1964 we started a band - an instrumental surf band, which was a rarity in Tennessee. The irony was that West Coast surf music was winding down about the same time when we got started.

I'll skip the history lesson, as it would be quite lengthy, but here is the Cliff Notes version: Three of us entered the military between 1968 and 1970 because of the Vietnam War. Then came jobs, family obligations and my relocation to Florida and then Georgia. We reconnected in 1996 and played quite a few live shows between then and 2003, at which time we decided to cease doing live shows and record when time and work pressures allowed.

2014 was the 50th anniversary of our formation and the plan was to release our third album. However, due to work conflicts and geographical logistics, we had to put that project on hold for the time being.

Here are some band pictures...1966 and 2003

Here's mine ... The Mustangs 1965. I remember we had two Princeton Reverbs and we were always told we were too loud. Smile

Great pix! Did you guys get thrown out of that motel? From the looks of things, it must have been a college frat road trip party.

I met surfinjohnnyq at a dive bar in south Minneapolis at a Surf night back in 2008. We got another guitarist, practiced a few times and did a gig a couple months later. We met the drummer that night.

The other guitarist got hired the same night for a different band, Johnny ended up in a rockabilly band and I found a couple guys to play surf instrumentals in the Twin Cities.

Looking for some jazz and a little libations - js

My first surf "band," back in 1962, was actually just a duo -- me and my pal Al Karp -- billed as the Bi-Tones. Then we added first a drummer and a keyboardist, then later a bass. The names morphed along the way, first to the Twi-Lites then, in the Spring of 1964, when we started performing and recording original (non-surf) material, to the better known "Abstracts"

Here are a few very early (1962 and 1964), and one later (1966), photos...
