_Hi,
I've been reading Spectropop for a few years now and
have never participated but decided it's time that I
should. Long time friend and acquaintance, Artie
Wayne, also encouraged me to share some of my stories.
I really didn't know where to start until yesterday
when I ran across an old video of one of the first
bands I ever played in, Dick Dale and the Del Tones.
This is a clip from 1963 of us playing Miserlou from
the film "Swinging Affair" (I'm the blond headed guy
in the center with the Strat, wish I still had that!).
That got me to thinking on how I met Dick and how he
got me started in music. I owe Dick a lot and I am
ever thankful to him. If you would like to read more

Cool. I saw another Del-Tone at Huntington Beach at the pier playing with "The Surf Rockers". It would be great to be able to talk to those guys in some detail about what it was like playing in DD's band during that period!

Hey Everybody! It's a Del-Tone!
Wow - Art Munson - too cool - it is really excellent that you are here. I have some questions, if you don't mind.
What was it like playing then - Did you know you were doing something really great?
Was Dick Dale a real hard ass, as the stories go?
You played with Dick early on, then after the service, you played with him again - any differences?
Was it you that showed Dick the "in between" pickup positions on the strat?
What did you do after the "surf" years? Any surf music?
Do you stay in contact with any other guys from the Del-Tones?

I suppose he was but I was playing with him while I was in Marine Corps (and just after I got out) so compared to the Marine Corp it didn't seem that tough to me. He just knew what he wanted to hear and what he wanted us play. He was pretty specific. But more importantly, I was so happy to be in that band I would have probably stood on my head for him:)

No, everything was just the same though I missed playing at the Rendezvous. By that time he was playing at Harmony Park in Anaheim.

I don't recall that but it could be true.

One of the sax players (sometimes we had two) in the band was Barry Rillera who was also a great blues guitar player. He was always asking me to go to a club in Santa Ana and sit in with these two guys but I was too shy to go. Well eventually I did and was blown away, those two guys were the Righteous Bros. and that eventually turned into my next big break! From there I went on to different bands, moved to L.A. and did a lot of studio work. I have a list of a lot of albums I played on at my web site www.munsongrecords.com.
Do you stay in contact with any other guys from the Del-Tones?
Unfortunately no. I do know Billy Barber died awhile ago. I'd like to see them again if I could ever track them down. I did go to Dick's 70th birthday party and it was so great to see him. Blew his mind as he had no idea I would be there, we had a great time.

It's funny about that Miserlou clip as I had remembered being in the movie. In fact Dick's assistant had just called me last week to ask me some questions and I had mentioned the movie to him. What I didn't remember was the Miserlou clip and was as surprised as anyone when I discovered it last week on YouTube. Gotta love the net!

I actually discovered this site after you posted here. Thanks for doing that. I'm flattered that folks are interested in this stuff as I never thought anyone would be. I have been on the net since 1989 selling tapes on some of the newsgroups and putting up my first e-commerce site in 1995. This is a lot more fun though as creating music (both past and present) will always be my first love.

I hope you will answer some more questions for me Art.
I've seen all the clips of Dick Dale in the early years. Was he as dynamic a performer as he appears? to me, the sound he was generating must have been quite a sight, and then add his personality to it -
Was the "Dick Dale sound" a shock to people in the early 60's? What did "society" think of him and his music?

How many people were typically in the Del-Tones at that time?

I have a question about playing in a big band without a modern PA system. With Dick blasting at full volume, how were instruments like the piano and horns heard over all the ruckus?

Hi Chris,
Yes Dick was very dynamic and charismatic. The sound was very powerful for the times and the size of those speaker cabinets was unheard of. The Dick Dale sound in So Cal at the time was the sound. We pretty much outdrew any other act around. Driving up to the Rendezvous or Harmony Park and seeing kids everywhere trying to get in (and many not able to) was all pretty exciting. A definite adrenalin rush, it was the place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. When we went back to the East coast it was a different story. Those kids did not know what to make of the music, it was pretty much a bust for us.

Hi Brian,
Sorry but I don't remember a typical set list. Once a night we almost always did one tune (can't remember the name) where Dick played guitar, trumpet, drum solo and I think piano. Kind of "ran" the stage.
I think the biggest the band was when we were at Harmony Park. Two saxes, two guitars (not counting Dick), Piano, Bass and Drums.

The horns and piano were miked and there never seemed to be a problem being heard.
