Are surf drummers out there typically using kits that are four or five pieces? Is there a standard surf drum kit? I realize it doesn't matter and it's all about personal preference, but I'm just curious. It seems like a lot of folks I see are playing four pieces rather than five. Why is that? Is it mainly a tradition thing? Is the larger tom just not used that often? Is the damn thing just in the way of the ride? What gives?
Thanks.

I suppose they use a 4 piece cuz its more comfy, It looks more traditional, and yes that extra TomTom gets in the way of the ride. I like it as a four piece, it looks nicer

I myself play a simple 4 piece because it suits my drumming style.I can do everything I need to with the basics.that includes 2 crash's ,a ride cymbal,and 14'' inch Hi-hats.Every now ,and then I put my other tom tom back on my set,and play around a bit.Yet at the end of the day I always take it back off,and realize what was I thinkin' The way i look at all idols like Birdstuff,Mel Taylor,and Ted Pilgrim played 4 piece kits,so that's good enough for me.
Sure I was once like every other drummer who started playing in the 80's,I had to have as many cymbals and drums I could fit in the corner of my bedroom.Roto Toms included
Yet I'm still for dual bass drum pedals.

Steve from the Verbtones proudly plays a 5 piece with the two rack toms. The kit I had when the Pilgrims started was a 63 Pearl kit with the ride cymbal mount on the kick drum where a second rack tom would be. I used that at first, until it broke, and then found a really low stand for my ride, so that it could sit in the space in between the rack and the floor tom, as low as possible. I also raised my seat and found that this really worked for me, playing down on the ride, instead of reaching up or to the side for it.

Tone, Tradition, Comfort, Style, Coolness...and of course, availability and budget, all play a role in a drummers choice of a drum kit.
It's all personal and all subjective....
...this is what I prefer
image
1964 vintage, 20-bass,12-rack tom,14-floor tom (jazz sizes), and a matching wood 5x14 snare.
they sound like this...

Damm!!! A SlingerLand, how much $ was that? That is nice. I like those kits but they always sell for alot, just like those Gretsch kits.
I've never really seen an early 60s Pearl kit, Got any pics of it Ted?

I got the main drums in this kit about 10 years ago at a pawn shop in Santa Ana, CA and the cymbals about 25 years ago.
Here's the cost breakdown, if you're interested...
Slingerland -
$ 300 - 14x20 bass, 8x12 rack, 14x14 floor (all 1964) - Rhodes Pawn
$ 325 - 5-1/2x14 Hollywood Ace model snare - eBay
$ 300 - 2 cymbal stands, hi-hat, bass pedal - eBay, shops
Zildjian -
$ 400 - 20"ride, 18"crash/ride, 16"crash, 14" hi-hats
...a reasonable investment, I think....
I've been offered $2,700 just for the drums, no hardware or cymbals!...but, I'll never sell...

Dam, for that price you basically stole those drums. Good deal man. I'm not surprised that you've been offered that much. But yeah I dont think it would be worth selling them Oh what color is your kit? Is it WMP?

Yeah, i play drums and keyboards too. Here's my Rogers set i bought at Leo's Music store on 17th and Clay Sts. in Oakland Ca. in 1969. That was the year i turned 21 and got a check from the Social Security office. My dad died when i was 11 and had this money in there and i bought these drums and have used them my entire career. It's the only thing i have that my father "gave me"!! AND they always did sound fantastic. The snare is an old 60's Ludwig that i traded for the Dyna-Sonic snare that came with the set. The second pic is them now. I don't know what that green thing is in front!!!! haha.

hey Kyle take off that silly tape off your drum heads and buy some Zero Rings from Remo.I'm going to assume you put that tape on there to kill the buzzing sound.I always hated seeing that ugly tape on drum heads ,or even worse ,on cymbals That's always been a pet peev of mine .Sorry!
Plus it's really takes away from the natural sound.

Rings are more idiotic than tape. What a racket. Put a coated head on, make it sound good, and hit it.

Here's my mid 60's "Stewart" kit copy of a Slingerland/Rogers etc. it's got that nice aged yellowed mother of toilet thing going
I'm not a fulltime drummer by any means but I've been playing drums on and off since the early 90's I just love playing all kinds of different instruments besides guitar.
Kyle...your kit is "très bichon"! (very bitchin')
Have you had it a long time?
