That was pretty interesting. I wonder how much the old man really does appreciate all these offshoots and how much he was just being polite. Or conversely, how much some of these bands particularly want DD's approval.:hmmm: He does flatter himself though:

Cool article. I like the line by Dave, "These bands are all your children." Interesting to note that Sam Bolle, then playing bass with Agent Orange, went on to back up Dick years later. —Radio Free Bakersfield--60 Minutes of TWANG, CRUNCH, OOMPH. |

Thank you Zanti. Good point. I'm not trying to be a hater, I'm just saying. I love the dude's old music. Hell, I'm trying to copy it! That was innovation, and an impression left on the entire genre of rock n' roll which he can't be denied. I just think he's lost his touch and lost sight of what made him great. There are lots of other bands that have picked up what he abandoned, some of them mentioned in that article, and carry the torch he lit (olympics metaphor!--pertinent!) while he now remains on the sidelines feel- and songwriting-wise. There's no doubt he's the single most important person in the history of surf music. But that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that he's not flawless. Every surf guitarist I've heard has aspects of their style that don't appeal to me. DD is by no means immune. |

yeah i just don't like it when people are all over his nuts, and can't handle a little bit of criticism to him. —-Zanti Instagram: |

If I didn't know better, I would have suspected the interview to be fake with the sole purpose of making Dick Dale look like a complete fool, haha. — |

i asked david about this today. here's a little tidbit of what he said... "......I didn't tell him who the bands were unless he would "...... ..The article came out a few months before "Pulp Fiction' came out....". — |

Very cool. Makes sense that this was right before Pulp Fiction. Everything gets weird after that! |

Times - and Dick's attitude - have changed: "I just love being considered part of the family with all these bands so far. To me, it's the greatest fuckin' honor. To be even thought of ... for somebody to say 'Hey, he's one of us!' You can't get any better than that! It's like a slap in the face to all these assholes in the mainstream ... It's like 'Ha, ha, ha! Look! We're all doing this kind of music!'" Would we hear him say that today or in the last ten years? Ivan —Ivan |

Wow.....when Dave was interviewing DD, I was there that night. I wouldn't meet Dave for another coupla months.....but I met Don Murray because the Surfaris were opening for Dick. That night was the beginning of my life in surf music (which doesn't count my childhood listening to this stuff, it was just part of my world, not my entire world!). |

uh, around this house, DD rates a little higher than the big daddy in the sky. we let him say what he wants. remember, he is older than alot of us and doesn't see the world as we do. old? |

Interesting article, which I hadn't seen. I'm pleasantly surprised that Dick knew the names of the bands that had opened for him in 1993. I saw Man or Astroman? open for him in Tuscaloosa, AL. Dick's routine, at least that night, was: Dick stayed in his hotel room while the opening act(s) played. Once he got the phone call confirming that they had finished, then he came down to the club and starting loading in after they had loaded out. So he never heard them play. By the way, both MoA? and DD were great that night, although Dick's backing unit for that tour wasn't up to the later standards of Dusty Watson and Ron Eglit. A few weeks later I saw Dick open for MoA? in Athens, GA. Well, sort of. Dick refused to go on after midnight, so he went on third, and MoA? went on fourth. Dick split after his set and didn't hear MoA? play that night either, which was sad in that they played "Taco Wagon" in his honor. |
