The time is drawing near.. the ships are setting sail, and the wahines wave goodbye as we all make the journey back to the Island of the Car Gods…

The low rumble of the volcano is replaced by the growl of ancient engines.. it can only mean one thing!

It is time for Hot Rod Hula Hop 4!

The one, the only, and the original.. midwest mash up of tiki bars and hot rod cars!

The infamous greaser's luau returns for its fourth year, and you do not want to miss it!

The Fraternal Order of Moai and the Headhunters cc have skirted the unexplored corners of the globe in search of the savage.. the unusual.. the tropical tiki sights and sounds your mainland soul has been calling out for..

..and now it will be unleashed!

AUGUST 8th and 9th in sunny and tropical Columbus Ohio

Hot Rod Hula Hop 4

Largo’s Tavern
6159 E. Glick Rd.
Powell, OH 43065

Friday Night

"The Feast of the Tiki Gods"

Live performances by:

The winners of the Hawaiian Music Awards Exotica category.. Masters of the birdcall and Princes of Okonkuluku… the fabulous Waitiki!

playing all of your classic favorites like no one else can.. direct from Hawaii, the voice of the islands... the great Francis Llacuna!

flying in on his Witco jet, the poet laureate of Polypop.. the alii of all that is aloha.. the voice that makes the wahines swoon and the fellas take up the ukulele.. the incomparable Pablus!

her hips and hands are insured for well over a million dollars, but her moves are beyond priceless.. her Hawaiian ancestry shows as she dances the same traditional hulas as her grandmother did before her.. the spell binding Leilani!

Plus.. a kalua pig roast, full Polynesian buffet dinner, and all the classic mai tais you could wish for... with fresh mint of course! And this year we are proud to have on hand for sale Trader Vic’s own mai tai glasses to serve his famous cocktail in. Be sure to pick one up as a souvenir, and refill it all weekend long! At a mere $5 a mai tai, how can you say no?

Saturday Night

"The Octane Ritual"

Our reputation for putting on what is simply the weirdest and best show of the summer has been steadily growing by word of mouth. From the soulful sounds of tradewind breezes, to crashing waves of melodic surf, to the raucous rhythms of pure adrenaline, we always seek out the best of both tiki and kustom culture just for you. Explore the boundaries of your musical tastes as we take you on a wild ride… like a trip from the sunny beach back to a beer soaked punk after party. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself with a Blue Hawaiian in one hand, and a raised can of American beer in the other!

Live on stage that night:

The Koffin Kats

The Cocktail Preachers

Waitiki

Go! Tsunami

The Heptanes

And of course.. this show would simply not be the same without the amazing performances by the talented ladies of Barnyard Burlesque!

And… returning champions of the turntable.. the Fabulous Freaks from The Surfabilly Freakout and Java from the Bachelor Pad radio show!

And of course we'll have a lot full of the hottest hot rods and customs!

Not to mention... Tiki gods, tropical drinks, food by the FOM chef (featuring menu items from Trader Vic’s and the Kahiki!), vintage and tiki vendors, artists, and all the PBR and heat you can stand!

Grab advance tickets now at www.hotrodhulahop.com

And yes, we know they are cheap. Nobody does a show like this for so little.

We do suggest buying advance tickets to ensure you get to see this show. We do expect Friday to sell out especially fast. It always does, and this year it is bigger than ever. Many people missed out last year, do not be one of them!

Sponsored by our pals at Kahiki Foods, Trader Vic's, DaddyKatz.com, Tiki Magazine, Bachelor Pad Magazine, and Surfabilly Freakout.. big mahalo to all of them for the help!

And for the rodders who bring their cars, we have goodie bags for you provided by Jegs, Speedway Motors, Hoosier Racing Tires, & Edelbrock! Again we say mahalo!

We are still booking select vendors. Space will become very limited as we get closer. You want to ensure you get a super cheap space to sell some goods this year?

Send a message to: kukuahu@yahoo.com and title it "HRHH4 vending"

Aloha!

Gotta double check that I've got the vacation days coming, but I'm very much intending to make Hot Rod Hula Hop 4! Although it's too new for the car show, I'll be driving my 1980 Pinto wagon to Columbus. It may not be show quality, but it's something rare, these days.

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

Hear Friday nights event is sold out already wow!! Ran into some of the FOM folks at the Chef Shangi-La event in Chicago last weekend. They were getting us pumped up for the Hop this year. Spoke of some good stories of previous years. Looking forward to playing it Jet should be a great time.

Steve

Yep- Friday night (the Feast of the Tiki Gods - dinner & show) is 100% sold out. Steve - did you and Phil get tix? Rumor has it that there will be a cocktail room crawl back at the hotel after the Feast.

Saturday should be a blast! We'll be DJ'ing the car show all day (with a cat named Hi-Fi Hijinx and Java from the Bachelor Pad). We'll also be MC'ing the indoor stage that night.

Looking forward to seeing/hearing you guys again - I heard that the shows last weekend were great!

That tiki stuff seems to be a hotter ticket than surf bands lately. Congrats on the sold out show, man!

Congrats on the sold out show, man!

Thanks man!

Please note, that it is just the Friday night event that is sold out. We had a limited capacity of 120 given that we are doing a full-blown Polynesian buffet.

We have a larger capacity for the show on Saturday night and there are still tickets available:

Go! Tsunami
The Heptanes
Waitiki
The Cocktail Preachers
Koffin Kats

There are pre-sale tix available for Saturday night too at www.hotrodhulahop.com

Thanks again - should be a fun weekend!

Lookin' forward to seein' some of ya there, on Saturday! Put in for a couple of vacation days, today (Saturday and Sunday), so I'll be able to recover from how late Saturday night will be. As I said before, although it's too new for the car show, my 1980 Ford Pinto wagon will be there...sure beats the heck out of my 91 F150, fuel mileage wise, even though gas has recently dipped below $4.00/gallon.

Thanks to Jet and members of FOM for an absolute knock down drag out great time. The crowd was way over the top and we hadn't had that much fun playing a show since say Champaign or Exotica in Chicago. I also enjoyed the other bands as well, especially go sunami! This is a must do event if you dig the Tiki scene or just enjoy great surf/rockabilly/ exotica music. Thanks again Jet & FOM. We bow to the big Kahuna.

Thanks Steve. The Preachers' set was awesome - you guys had the whole place jumpin' - the dance floor was completely full of people loving the music! I think Midwest Surf Guy would have gotten the whole thing on video had he not had a 6'7" lummox (wearing a fez) dancing in front of his camera. Monkey

Thanks to you and all the SG101'ers that were able to make it this year. Already looking forward to '009!

Steve, great to see you guys again. You guys were rocking the house.

Hey Ted-

As always, Go! Tsunami was raucous! It was great to look around the room and see the grins plastered on people's faces when you were on stage. There were a lot of people who asked me: "Who were those masked men?!?!!!".

Looking forward to seeing you again soon!

My personal highlights from Saturday:

-Synchronized arpeggios (Go! Tsunami)
-The Hammond sound in surf instrumentals (Go! Tsunami)
-A Univox Hi-Flyer Bass (Phil of Cocktail Preachers)
-Driving rhythms that could get ya arrested for speeding, if ya listen to 'em while driving (Heptanes & Koffin Kats)
-One set I didn't need my earplugs for (Waitiki)
-The Cocktail Preachers
-Hendrix-style behind the head playing...with a double bass Shocked (Vic - Koffin Kats)
-Tommy & Vic swap instruments during a song, then swap back at the end of it (Koffin Kats)
-Seeing some folks that I haven't seen in a while

Thanks Matt, appreciate it dude!

Guy you are a true surf music road warrior. Driving from FLorida for the show. Wow!! I listened to the mp3 recorder and unfortunately It didn't work. Thanks for trying though. But if you're willing to send us a DVD of our performance at Hula Hop I'll gladly pay you $$ the standard ransom fee.
Good luck on the Cincy show sorry thing didn't work out for us this time to play there, I'm sure Maderia will be primed from the west coast tour at put on a memorable performance.

It was good seeing you again Matt. Very glad you could make it this year!

Thought I would share a few pics from the evening. More can be found on our MySpace page here (you'll need a MySpace acct.):

The night started off with Go! Tsumani. Great heavy surf originals with some standards thrown in.

image

They were followed by The Heptanes. Rocka- Psychobilly from Charleston, W. Va.

image

They were followed by Waitiki - incredibly accomplished Exotica band (a big favorite of the Tiki crowd)

image

Then came on 'the Windy City's Lords of Libation'...the Cocktail Preachers...

image

The last planned act of the evening was the Detroit-area pyscho-punks...the Koffin Kats. They absolutely blew it up!

image

Since we were running on time Shocked , we popped Vegas 66 on stage at the end of the night...fun rocka- psychobilly band.

image

Great night. Thanks to all who were able to come - and to those that stopped by this thread to see the pics. Already looking forward to next year!
