BTD, how about having the next convention here in the bay area? Haha, for some reason I dont think that it would be as good as in L.A. But we'll do ur best to go nest time.
Hey if someone wants to do the sg101 event somewhere else.
I dont hold the copyright on it.
I think it would be better in L.A, I believe more people would show up
...or Las Vegas! awesome low airfare/hotel...burning HOT desert climate...casinos, buffets, cheap beer...swimming pools...

hey...anyway back to the sg101 convention the we just attended!!!
it was freaking awesome!
I saw a vintage dragster!
I saw Eddie Bertrand and Paul Johnson totally playing together...
I met a dude named "Craig" and he returned my short guitar cable after he used it to tune!
I saw Brian in-person...his jaw was dropping while the Madeira were blasting him with 137db from 1 meter away....
it was AWESOME!

And reading this thread, I keep hearing mention of dp playing a mean bass. I hope someone caught you on vid. Never enough talk about you unsung heroes of bass, and I really dig the instrument. I can only live vicariously through these stories. They are great!
I keep thinking of the Madeira---I mean, I know lots of bands were there and playing awesomely, BUT.... are they like the Iron Men of surf bands, or what?? They fly in, rehearse--hit the stage in San Diego, up the coast for two consecutive days of shows--then finish with a special taping, and by all accounts, never letting up on the energy. Inspiring dedication.
Hey, inspiring dedication by a LOT of people. This is really a great community.
Thanks everyone for posting the pictures!

I ain't-a-goin', if I can't go surfin'!........well, I didn't really do to0 much actual surfing.....mostly just wipeing out........ The good thing is, if you are a bad at it as I am, the locals just sort of look at you and chuckle a bit. I'm not good enough to even ridicule yet.
All those guys I kept runinng into, over and every other preposition you can come up with were pretty good sports about the "Gremmine from back East" invading their turf......ooops sorry SURF.
Thanks Mom and H for the advice and patience. Old dudes rule.......ah, well, maybe, but at least one of them tries...........

Keeping it it the Los Angles/Orange County area on a Saturday allows you to link it to a Surf Museum or pier show on Sunday, so you've got a two day event.
This is just hindsight at this point, but a larger venue would also be better. Would it be possible to get the HB pier and have both days there? If not, a larger room with bigger A/C.
I don't know if Suzy's would want to host it again... those owners didn't look very happy.

Some random thoughts on some random thoughts...
Traffic:
Yes, traffic around LA can be a real bitch. However, it's no worse than any other big city like NYC or Chicago. Its no secret traffic is an issue. Plan accordingly. Allow adequate travel time. The 101 in the valley & the 405 between the 101 & LAX are almost always very heavy. Don't think you can leave at the last minute & breeze into town on time.
Location:
So Cal is where surf music & the culture born. This is where such an event belongs. You have more surf music performers per square mile here than perhaps any place else, thus the best chance to see the legends & big names perform. It's also where the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum is located. Having the event near the surf museum and a Sunday concert at the HB Pier is the best opportunity to see the most entertainment in 2 days making it the most cost effective option.
My suggestion would be to schedule the next SG101 event on a Saturday in Surf City in conjunction with a HBISM Sunday concert. This would minimize the travel & hotel issues for those from out of town.
When possible, fly into Orange County "SNA" or Long Beach "LGB" Airports. Less traffic & hassle.
The "fairness" of Eddie being filmed at Hermosa Suzys & not Madeira:
(solely my opinion & not those of those producing the movie)
Actually, there were quite a few people being filmed Saturday. Eddie & PJ are both historical figures in the surf movement. It is important to ocument their performances when practical. The Madeira were scheduled to be filmed in the studio the following Monday & were in fact filmed in the studio in a very controlled professional environment to feature them at their absolute very best. Those that were there will attest The Madeira delivered.
My lovely bride who is no fan of surf music even enjoyed them. Being a native of Indiana, she visited with them extensively in the green room. I think her comment was "Really nice guys even if they are from Indiana."
Of the entire weekend, nicest bunch of people I have ever hung with.

I'm real sorry I missed it, especially after hearing Eddie go on about what a great time he had. I'll start saving for next year now.

I think the show should stay in Orange county.
The perfect place would be the Kona Tiki place we went to Sunday night. Everything could be inside. That back room is big and the coolest room I have ever seen. Only problem might be the neighbors................It's an Old building and the sound might seep outside.

Great idea Maui.........Maybe we can rent the "Water Tower Condo" across the street for the weekend. That Kona Tiki place was perfect!

I wouldn't be too sure Abraham. I know the Rendezvous is gone for sure - it burned down and then put up condos.

The Rendezvous's Ballroom in Balboa burned down in 1966.
(Watch the Surf Drum DVD)
Harmony Park in Anaheim is a vacant lot I think.
The Retail Clerks Hall in Buena Park still exists for now but the cost is prohibitive.
I think there are numerous places in Surf City & the local near by surrounding area that could host this at no charge. My suggestion is a centralized location to minimize travel, traffic & parking hassles.
I like Eddie K's "Kona" suggestion. Possible issues, noise, small stage, Can those 2 back rooms be made all one room? If those issues can be resolved, great place.
