Permalink How to get the classic surf guitar sound

New Topic

an excellent article on the topic:
http://www.myrareguitars.com/letsgosurfing.html

check THIS SITE under topics, under gear, it's called " surfguitar101: gear (a primer for gremmies)"

Gav submitted that here almost six months ago, i suspect he sent it to myrareguitars too, which is totally cool btw. (I think you can win something with it, actually.)

anyway, that's what happens when people don't check the site but rush in to the forums Evil
(sits on park bench, folds hands over cane, mumbles "ts ts ts" to himself... just kidding man Wink )

Laughing Laughing Laughing

I had the same, I looked it up because I recognized Gavins name - he used to post quite a bi on the old yahoo group.

good catch anyway, maybe it will direct some people to the article who havent seen it yet, and to myrareguitars.com

I've decided I'm gonna go off the deep end (although some people might question "gonna?"), and base my original surf guitar sound around modified Fender and Squier Telecasters. I've already got a Squier Standard Fat Telecaster that's gonna get GFS Lipstick p'ups and a 4-way switch, and a Fender Standard Telecaster that's also gonna get a 4-way switch (haven't decided what brand/model of replacement single coils I'll get).

On my "to buy list" I have a Squier Tele Custom II, and a Fender Deluxe Nashville Telecaster. Depending how the p'ups sound, out of the box (the Squier having Duncan designed P90s), I may or may not replace those, and both will get a tremelo added...I'm thinking along the lines of a Bigsby B5 for the Squier, and a Floyd Rose for the Fender. The Squier will also get a 28 5/8" scale baritone neck. If I get ambitious enough, I may even see about scaring up a Tele-bodied Fender Precision bass, just to round out my Tele-centric original surf guitar sound...er...look.

I know that Jazzmaster, Stratocaster and Jaguar are the more popular choices for surf guitar, but from the time I was a high school freshman, I've purposely lived my life with a dare to be different mentallity. I've continued in that vain, over the past 19 years beyond high school, and I figure "why stop now?" Besides, once I decided to use all Telecasters for my original surf guitar sound, I've finally come up with a name for my future surf guitar band (although it might be just me, for an album or two) that'll be Tele-centric...using the Tele part of Telecaster.

That article was a very informative one, and except for my guitar choice, I'll be looking to follow as much of the article as I can, as I continue to gear up for, and create my original surf guitar tunes. Smile

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

Yeah, I posted it to MyRareGuitars. They give you a free t-shirt! And an entry to win a free guitar!

I was too lazy to write something original. But I figured, it has gotten its fair share of reading here, and reprinting it there probably would help some people who dig MyRareGuitars.

Glad Brian didn't mind Wink I did tell Michael Robinson that it had originally appeared here.
