no the Hagstroms are getting very expensive here in Sweden. i have heard that there are many collectors buying them, especially in th US. i have heard that ZZ Top is huge collectors of Hagstroms. dont know if its true though.. —The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier. www.myspace.com/tumbleweedofsurf |

Side note, the new Darkstar pickup is currently all the rage among bass players. It's a copy of the Hagstrom Bi-sonic used in Guild basses in the 60's. Supposed to be amazing sounding. I guess Hagstrom was onto something here. You see lots of (mostly) P-basses retrofitted with these. |

I like Hagstroms. I have a few of them- a Kent, two II's, a III, and two basses. I'm partial to the ones with the single coil pickups. Later versions of the H-series guitars had humbuckers- nice, and probably better, but not my cup of tea. I also have a Cromwell (not the American Gibson-made Cromwells of the 1940's) that was made by Hagstrom in the mid-1960's. Serpico- was Cromwell a department store or retailer in Sweden in the 1960's? They're all pretty cool guitars, and not bad for surf; the tremolos work o.k. once you get used to them. But I gotta be honest- I'm a sucker for a Euro-trash guitar! How can you not appreciate a guitar that comes in a chipboard, tiger-stripe lined case? |

Our bass player used an H8 1967 Hagstrom bass until he got a Fender Jazz bass. Although I don't think the Jazz bass has a tonal range any where near as good as the H8, string sets for the H8 are near impossible to get. http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/graphics/ebay/h8-1.jpg Myself, I have a 1967 12 String Hagstrom that really doesn't work for leads on surf style at all as far as I am concerned, but it really sounds great as a rhythm guitar. http://www.myrareguitars.com/pictures/hagstromh12small.jpg Last we have a F200 1966 Hagstrom 6 string that we have used for leads. I can't tell the difference between it and my 94 Strat for sound and we've recorded both in the studio. http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/graphics/Hagstrom66p7.jpg As for price, I paid a lot more than $49 for my Hag 12 stringer (in the order of $200 and I bought it used)... The Hags from the 60's have the thinnest and fastest neck of anything I've ever laid hands on (which isn't all of them but a good number). Makes my Strat feel like a 2x4 neck. My own opinion is that the old Hags can do nicely for surf music. For the new Hags, I haven't been able to get my hands on one to try it and see how it plays and what it sounds like. Cost is certainly cheap enough. We actually went out to buy one last year (Ultralux XL2 or 5) mostly for rhythm work, and ended up with a Godin XTSa and a Roland VG88 for it because nothing else in the stores had the playability or range of it for me. I was pleasantly surprised that it works out well as a lead guitar too (icing on the cake). My only gripe about the Godin XTSa is that is only about 2lbs lighter than my Chrysler...:-) —Mel |

My nearest music store seels the new Hagstroms and I thought the Swede and Viking were well put together.I didn't plug in.Unfortunately,he didn't have any F series in stock but they sure look like a great $300.00 guitar. |

I almost bought a Hagstrom III about a year ago...thought it was a very good surf guitar. But then again what do I know...I play a Duo Jet in my instro/surf band. I don't really care for the Hag reissues. — |

I'm a big Hagstrom fan. I have 2 Swedes, a '72 and a '75 (the '75 is identical to the one in the Zappa photo) Also have a '68 Viking, like the Elvis one but mine is tobacco sunburst. Cost $500 on ebay just recently. They are all damn good guitars for surf! The Swedes have two toggle switches, one is for pickup selection the other is for tone. With both in the middle it sounds great. The Viking sounds like a cross between a Jag and a Tele. They are all insanely easy to play too. I can't offer much of an opinion on the newer Chinese made ones, suffice to say they look well built. I have tried a new F200, it sounded good with the P90s, tremolo (strat style) didn't stay in tune all that well. They get good reviews on Harmony Central. — |
