I FINALLY got my Showman cab from getting recovered (as in, having a new tolex and new grille cloth put on it). It's been in the shop for two and a half months! A very long and frustrating two and a half months... Last night was the first time I joined my new Showman head and the cab (I got the head after the cab was already in the shop). Ain't that just the most beautiful sight you've ever seen??? Very Happy

image

BTW, the head is a January '64, with transformers from '62 and '63. The cab is a '68, the last year that the single 15 cab was made, but I recovered it to early '64 specs. It has an original JBL D130F in it, and an original tone ring.

Finally, I should mention that after a long and fruitless search we gave up on finding the golden sparkle grille cloth. Nobody had it in stock. We ended up going with wheat grille cloth, which looks really nice anyway. I really wish I could have gotten the authentic stuff, but what can you do.... Thanks to everyone that tried to help me out on that one, anyway. I really appreciated it.

The amp gets its premiere tonight! Can't wait!

Very nice.
Now I feel bad that I can't offer a good looking amp for you to play on when you come here.. ;)

Ivan, what brand/type of picks do you use? I don't recognize the pick in your strings in the above picture.

sweet, Ivan. Now all you need is a matching suit to with your rig. Can you make clothes out of tolex?javascript:emoticon('')

Danny-
That is so funny. I once told Dave Wronski I wanted a black Tolex suit... he took a step back and said, "Oh yeah, I've met people like you before".

Ivan- great rig man!

I used to joke around about grille cloth underwear. What would be worse. Grille cloth boxers or a grille clothe bra? You wouldn't exactly be a winner with either of those.

Jacob, Grille cloth is the way to go, maybe a jacket, something mariachi style, with fender logos stitched in metallic. It may itch, but it definitely breaths. Shocked

It's a Dunlop Delrin 500 .96 in hot pink. The only pick I used for at least 12 years. Love the feel, love the grip, love the hot pink which makes it almost impossible to lose. And after each gig or each playing session there's a bunch of pink dust on the pickguard under the strings - I look at that and I feel like I did my job. Cool

And Ran, not to worry, as long as it's a tube Fender I'll be ecstatic to play it! After all, the looks REALLY don't matter with amps, do they? So, thanks in advance whatever the amp is.

Finally, a big THANKS to everyone for the compliments on the amp. I'm thrilled to have it, for sure. In total I ended up paying about $1400 for the head and the cab, including the shipping and re-covering, which I think is a good deal considering it's a vintage amp. Not a collectable piece, but a damn good sounding one.

I think the amp looks better with the non-gold sparkle grille cloth. Did you use wheat? I don't remember. It also appears to match your strat better. It is a very good looking Shoreline Gold.

Cool, I'm glad you like the way it looks now. I do, too, it doesn't really bother me that it doesn't have the gold sparkle. Yes, it is wheat grille cloth. Not bad... And yes, it does match the Strat quite nicely! I really like the way this combination of gear looks. It only took me ten years to get to this point!

! After all, the looks REALLY don't matter with amps, do they? So, thanks in advance whatever the amp is.

Well, I think it matters, but on the pyramid of what matters while being on a limited budget, I think it's not as high up as having a good sounding amp.
For a live gig, it definitely makes an impact to see an instrumental band sporting matching gear and garb (and moves). But the $1k-$1.5K investment per amp is substantial for most people (me included).

I agree that it looks good with the wheat. Anyone but the nerdiest resto freak would agree.

Right Ivan, with amps, only SIZE matters! (can you say "get a load of my 6L6, baby? " Twisted Evil )

so, why did you get it retolexed? (just kidding)

anyway, please tell me you're going to change the grillcloth on the reverb tank too! you might as well go all the way now that you've started
