Someone forwarded this to me, and I don't care enough to dig into the details, but it's interesting reading. Thoughts?
_Coldplay and their record label are giving undiscovered bands the chance to 'open' for the group in San Jose, Chicago, Philly, Hartford, Washington D.C. and Boston by entering an online contest.
To enter, bands need to submit an original song performance via YouTube.
For those of you who are considering the contest read the contest rules and fine print closely.
You could see your YouTube performance being used in ways you're not happy with and you won't be able to do anything about it!
There's even a line in the rules that says that Coldplay's record company can place your band's song on a compilation album and they wouldn't be required to pay up for usage.
It gets worse.
By submitting your bands' performance of an original song, Coldplay's record people have the exclusive option to sign your band to what appears to be a crappy record deal.
Is playing with Coldplay really worth giving up even an ounce of control over your original material?
Think about it hard!_

I'd do it. Coldplay is a crappy live band FYI.
Wouldn't be on that comp anyways, and it isn't like people normally get paid for comps.
A crappy record deal on EMI! Oh noes! What would be the worst thing about a band from and underexposed genre being on a major? They want you to change your album to where you aren't happy? Withhold the album.
A major label would tour you, promote you, amongst other things. Better than playing locally for peanuts.

The question I asked wasn't "are you going to enter?" it was "what would you give up?" I wanted to know what would you be willing to give up. I think the whole record contract threat makes this one out of the question...
I really didn't care enough. Sorry to disappoint.

Fact or opinion? I'm no fan of Coldplay but I caught them on the Daily Show last week playing 2 songs live. They sounded pretty good to me, inventive arrangements and instrument changes within songs. At least they don't sound like everyone else. I guess it is popular to knock them these days, I do it myself, but I'd rather listen to them than the scores of bands that all sound alike.

Funny you should say that-- I heard some of their new stuff, and I thought it was totally a U2 rip off! They always had a U2 influence, but after a band puts out a few albums, they are supposed to start to develop their own thing, not swing even closer to their heroes.

It is opinion, but I do rather enjoy them on CD. Martin is offkey live quite often.
The new album was produced by Brian Eno which is where they got the U2 sound from.
Chris Martin has one of the best senses of humor of any musician.

It's a contest to do the theme song for a new movie called "Henry Poole Is Here" starring Luke Wilson.
By my reading of the contract, here is what you win:
- A trip to Los Angeles to see a video of your song being shot. You may or may not appear in the video. (But, they list the value of the prize $1500 for each member of your band- which means you will have to pay taxes on that amount, even though you actually get any cash.)
What you lose:
- All rights to your song- sales AND publishing. A total buyout, you get nothing. This isn't just limited to the winner, but anybody who enters the contest.

Well, I said I was not a fan, but at first I thought they sounded more like Radiohead Light than U2. That falsetto voice is more Yorke than Bono. I never liked U2 probably for the same reasons people don't like Coldplay. Does anybody do their own thing anymore?

As for Coldplay sound like Radiohead. I say they try to be Radiohead, since Martin has explicitly said so, but they will never get into Radiohead's league as far as pushing musical horizons. I think Coldplay does a fairly commendable U2. And you are dead on about Martin being Yorke, except Thom has a much creepier falsetto, except on Fake Plastic Trees, which I think turns some people off.

I agree with you there Jake. I have all of Radiohead. While I can hear the influences of other bands on them, they taken everything and made it their own and then some. They are playing the Santa Barbara Bowl this summer for a mere $25 per ticket. I'll have to check out My Morning Jacket, although I already hate that name and it would be enough to keep me away if you hadn't recommended them.
