Permalink picking method?

Will someone describe to me the method used by the rhythm guitarist when just making the reverberated background sound?
Does one just play a static muted note, or does he follow the base beat?
When playing surf music of course. Very Happy
I've tried different methods but have yet to feel satisfied with the sound I am getting.

I assume you mean the muted drippy sound,
place the edge of your right palm across the bridge of the guitar so that your skin mutes the strings so they dont continue to vibrate.
for a heavy chugging sound press down really hard and pick hard with the reverb cranked up, and wala you have the astronauts sound for Baja etc.

Jeff your Astronauts example was correct as to what I'm asking about.
Here is another example that I think is clearer. Here the rhythm player seems to play a bass sort of line. Is this the normal way, Or does it depend upon the song?

for some of those 3 guitar songs like the Astronauts songs, the low rhythm player did play a very similar part as to what the Bass was doin.

then the other guy would do full chords, then the lead over the top of that.

not hard to play, but so many bands leave out that low chugging part, because they only have 2 guitars.
