I love the sax. I think that the guy in the lively ones was awesome. The guy in the Eliminators is definately great. In the Nelsonics we had a guy that could play tenor and bari and also played farfisa and theremin. Live he would play sax, organ and theremin as well as auxilliary percussion all in one song if need be. In the Exotics we did some gigs with sax and recorded with sax if the song warranted it.

The problem is that most sax players suck and frankly they are mercenaries. Reed instruments are harder to get good tone and intonation on than brass instruments. Most Sax guys look down on rock and roll and r&b sax. If it's not noodly jazz crap they're not into in. If the player is good then they are in like 5 bands. It took us years to get a great sax lineup in the Uptown Savages and we still have issues when it comes to booking. Check out guys like Big Jay Mcneely, Jr Walker, King Curtis and Chuck Higgins if you don't think that saxophone can rock.

Like Ted said on page one it is hard to get away from the sax if you are trad surf. I guess that I'm a throwback. I listen to mostly trad surf, old rockabilly, r&b and soul. I want to hear great ensemble playing, not just guitar shred no matter what kind of rock and roll I'm listening to.

I witnessed that first hand in Iowa City. He was playing sax with one hand and organ with the other as I recall. That was a great show!

We've got a guy who plays tenor and baritone. We've been able to come up with good parts for him, so it doesn't get too monotonous. He does sit out on a few songs, which also helps keep it from getting stale. It hasn't been as tricky as I thought it would be. The baritone is so cool.

We've played shows without him, and I got tired of listening to myself all night long. It's nice to break it up a little with something different.

Good GOD! That says it all!! For a short time, I worked at a Brass and Woodwinds Music Store that had a Guitar Dept. I tried to develop something out of the GTR DEPT, but the Owner NEVER had in mind of making anything out of that DEPT. The GTR Dept just 'existed' as an afterthought for guys who came in with Woodwind or Brass Players. That particular Store Catered to the Wind & Brass Players including Rentals and Lessons. They also were 'in with the School Board' , etc. After a while, I got fired for not learning about the Brass and Woods. I haven't stepped in that store since they let me go over a year ago, and I keep thinking about that GTR Dept. Why even bother?!?!? They were such ( CAN YOU SAY) FRICKIN NERDS! Of course, that left a BBAADD taste in my mouth for Brass and Woodwinds. And then reading some of the comments posted before me in which I agree, I no longer care for them.....
And yes I can CONFIRM that TUNNEL VISION MENTALITY they have, they think they are GOD, and the rest of us suck since we do play surf, rock, etc, and not their Brand of "NOODLY JAZZ" that you fall asleep listening to on the Weather Channel after drinking too much coffee.........

Well truth be told horns wouldn't work very well in my band but I love hearing sax on other records. It sure worked on a shitload of 60s records. The problem is that few sax players today can honk and growl like...Steve Douglas, for instance. What I really can't stand is that hideous David Sanborn "lite jazz" 80s style wanking, I think it made lots of people hate the instrument.

Well, you might be right, I personally may not be hangin with the right Horn Players, but then again, lately I seem to find no one BUT those hideous "lite jazz" 80s style wankers....

... but the Robots sax player would just politely bow out when not playing, great as he was... the Calrizians player would pick up a guitar and did double-duty and sounded great (esp playing through my amp!)
