Over the weekend I had the ipod on for several hours doing some work around the house listening to surf/instrumental music tracks. Many of them featured saxaphone (Surfer Stomp, Balboa Blue, Surfrider, and Surf Beat to name a few).
Do you have a sax player in your band?

I have 2 (tenor and bari) in my Rhythm and Blues Band, but none in my instro band although I wouldn't be opposed to recording with one.

We did for a period, but I just didn't dig it. I wanted to focus on a guitar-driven sound. I do love sax in other bands though (e.g., The Fathoms).

we are hopefully going to include one in our album in one of the songs. however, we are more of a guitar-driven band as well, although having a sax would make songwriting easier, because if i were ever stuck in a rut with a song and can't think of anything to put in i could always throw in a sax solo.

Always wanted one in the Aquanauts, but we got one in the Stacks.

Here is Bill Swanson, one of the best surf sax guys presently playing.

Jake?
When it comes to first wave, it's hard to escape the sax.
I would cut out my ear drums before I allowed sax anywhere near my band.

We don't now, nor will we ever have a sax player "in the band" but i wouldn't mind someone sitting in with us now and then especially if he could play like the guy in The Eliminators!!
I got to meet and do some work with Steve Douglas many years ago...i'd let him come up and do a few tunes but we're a "guitar" band and proud of it!!

Why? Where's that coming from? and please don't say Seattle!!

Nooooooooo... Not every song... Those are just examples of those with some sax. Bill also play various percussion instruments on many songs that do not call for sax.

Cool.......but where i'm from "horn players and percussionists are the first ones laid off" will your guy still be there when gas hits 5/6/7$ a gallon? I hope so....he's really good. I find myself listening to your guitar players though....and they compliment each other very well.

Just marginally. It is great for a couple of our songs but I don't dig it for some of them.

that's what's cool about me being the songwriter for my band-if i don't like something in a song, it doesn't survive in the song much longer.

Wow...that's a classic thread!! Jake's hatred of Saxophone is right up there with his hatred of all things Strat
-That being said, I kind of look at Saxophone the same way that I look at Stratocasters. Yeah, for the most part they're foul instruments but they can be used for good as well as evil. For every Kenny G and Huey Lewis song there's something by Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders to offset it. Even David Sanborn isn't entirely evil...there was that great TV show a few years ago that he hosted where he tore it up w/ Sonic Youth, etc and showed that he wasn't ONLY a sap-Jazz player.
I think that when used in moderation a Baritone sax could be a pretty cool addition to a traditional (or even non-traditional) surf band. The problem is that you'd need somebody who could play sax on a couple of tunes and then switch to a different instrument for the remainder of the set...sax on every tune just so you can keep the extra band member busy would be overkill and get old really fast.
This is all coming from a guy that played Baritone sax in high school though...and I also like Strats...so take it for what it's worth!
