Last week I started taking guitar lessons with The Ventures!!
My friend gave me a LP he picked up at a yard sale called Play Along With The Ventures. Vol 3. I think from 1966.
This album has 4 songs with an instruction book inside to follow... Secret Agent Man...A Taste of Honey...No Matter What Shape and Diamond Head. They play through the songs slow and then at normal speed for each part...Rhythm Bass and Lead. Then you get to play along with the band at normal speed with each part missing. I learned A Taste of Honey so far!!!
This album is really cool with some nice pic as well.

also, i believe that the whole "play guitar with..." series has been re-released on cd...check it out.
my favorite part of the album? i really like "tune your guitar with the ventures"....the ventures play an E and the n an A , D , G, B, and E'... i love tuning with the Ventures!

I believe the CD reissues don't come with the instruction book.

I've read interviews where everybody from Van Halen to Jimmy Page have commented about hearing or watching people play their stuff, and doing it differently, and often more complicated, while thinking they have it right. In most cases the musicians being copied claim they dig what the other person came up with jjust as much, or are intrigued and head down different paths by what they hear and see the copier doing and that new technique, chord, harmony shows up in their work later. Remember they weren't given the "right" way to play it by God. They made it up based on their own personal path or growth as a musician. I learned alot of Stones stuff not knowing about alternate tunings when I was a kid. You don't have to play in Open G or E to do that stuff, it's easier to write it in that, but not necessarily much harder to play in standard.
The best was Frampton trying to copy Hendrix. He said something like "I got quite close, then someone told me he had pedals that changed sounds and stuck extra notes in there..." Refering I'm sure to the Octavia on Purple Haze

There is a book called "The Best of The Ventures: Guitar Signature Licks Book/CD Pack." It is available on Amazon. Diamond Head is one of the included songs. By the way, that part you are referencing I believe is in Dm - maybe that helps.

Nice find Seafoam!
Before that Russian guy changed his website, one could open one of 68-69 albums and choose to hear songs randomly or in order. I listened to complete albums in their entirety one after the other. Then came the "overloaded server issue" then he wanted $$ to access what was once free. You can still get free "teasers" now. It was there that I found an awesome Ventures cover of Misirlou minus the trumpet on "stars on guitars" album I think. But now that album isn't listed. Anyone know who played lead guitar on that cover?? I'm sure to offend someone now but...whomever played lead on that cover played every bit as good as D.D. Now I'll take cover

Yes, that's the case for the single discs but there also was a CD box set which had the diagrams as printable pdf files on one of the discs.
I have two of the vinyl LPs and think they're great fun.

I just remembered someone posted photos of volume 3 including the booklet in the old Yahoo Group. I'll see if I can fish them out for the new members.

Brian,
Serpico asked about the tab for Diamond Head. I believe that I have the correct version.
However, I put all of my playlist into Guitar Pro format, so I don't have the normal tab generator. The good thing about Guitar Pro is that standard notation is generated by the tab and the duration of the note selected, so you get a sense of the pace of the music.
I just discovered that the Guitar Pro files can be exported as PDF files. For example, I have Diamond Head as a PDF file now.
My question is whether this is of any use to the site. In other words, are there ways to post a PDF file here?
Thanks for the help.
