Permalink Custom guitar - Some pick-up advice?, etc.

Hello.

I'm building a surf guitar called the "Surf Master". I'm going to wait until it's complete before I devolge all the details, but I was wondering if anybody could help me with advice.

First off, what kind of pick-ups would you recomend? I was thinking of going with some sort of strat/single-coil style pickup for the bridge position for that classic surf tone (Dick Dale, Miserou), and some sort of Getsch-style pickup at the neck for versatility.

I have to say that personally I think strats have the bridge pick-up angled the wrong direction for surf. I want more "body" on the high strings. And plus, the high-e string in bridge position through a reverb tank becomes earsplitting. If I had my way on my strat I think the low string would be picked up where the bridge pickup is placed, and the high string would be picked up where the mid pickup is placed. Anyways, that's where I stand on that.

I'm on an extreme budget, but I've noticed that on ebay fender pickups can go for really cheap. But I've also noticed that there are many different kinds, and honestly I don't know what the differences really are. What the difference for example between Texas Special, Deluxe SCN Noiseless, Hot, 50s Reissue, and Standard Strat pickups?

I also know that tone also has two other significant factors -- the strings, and the guitar itself (lets pretend your fingers don't really matter). I tend to use 12 or 13 guage flatwounds. As for the wood, on my guitar, it's redwood which I realize is an interesting choice. It's pretty resonant, so I'm thinking once I put strings on it'll actually have some nice big tone. I use a solid state amp for clarity (I find that tube amps turn the trip of my reverb unit into muck).

Does anybody here know anything about building a simple single-coil pickup? I figure that'd give me the most control over design (I could make it really long and place it at a 45 degree angle).

Other than that, does anybody have any advice in regards to:
- fret wire size
- fretboard radius
- are locking tuners worth the extra money? what exactly do they do?

Thanks,
THOR

Check out Steve Kersting's site. He has some great info and builds some great affordable pickups. He has one that fits in a strat position but is wound to sound like a P-90. There's also some great links on his site for more info.

Fret size and fretboard radius are a personal thing. Try a bunch of guitars out at the logal guitar store and see what feels best to you. Lately a lot of players have found a compound radius to be great if you'l be playing all over the board. It starts at about a 9.5" radius and gradually increase to a 12" radius on the upper frets.

I love locking tuners. In addition to make string changes quick they help keep the tuning more stable. You don't have all of those extra winds of string around the post to deal with.

There is Surf east of Sepulveda.

Hey for pick ups. I suggesst the custom shop fat 50's. They really punch the low end in but keep the highs in check. I believe they're the same as the 54 reissues but with a few extra coils somewhere. I coupled it with a TBX tone control and it lays off the highs even more, and brings them out alot if need be!

I built a custom strat using a Warmoth Hard Ash Body and a thick C shaped Maple/Ebony neck.

I really wanted to flip the bridge pickup too.... wasn't too sure of the effect it would have. I still may do that. Let me know when you're finnsihed!!

I make guitars pretty regularly and I stumbled upon some GFS pickups from Guitarfetish on Ebay. They are inexpensive and good. I've used the following:

GFS Premium overwound alnico set for strat (sounds great!)
GFS Split coil humbucker (like Tele thinlines) (sounds OK)
A cheap GFS pre-wired strat pickguard with ceramic pickups (Surprisingly good sounding, in fact, I liked these so much I put 'em on my personal strat)
GFS lipstick tube strat set (sounds great! Very surf-able)
GFS Gretsch filtertron style in humbucker size (sounds great! a brighter edge than a normal humbucker)
I've got a DeArmond style set that I've never tried out yet.

Fret wire and fingerboard radius are a matter of taste. I prefer medium wire and a 12" radius. I like locking tuners with a low friction nut and no string trees. The Gotoh HAP (Height Adjustable Post) vintage style locking tuners are my favorite.
