been listening a lot to the new RIP CHORDS album, "NOW"

it has been released by COLLECTIBLES Records

a great "summery" mix of California sound, typical Rip Chords harmonies, beautiful melodies, some neat killer instro from guitarist Mitch Schecter!!

includes sweet liner notes from Carol Connors as well!

check the band out here:

Oh God, no! Suicide

Sorry Freddie, but I can't stand this kind of stuff. I hate vocal surf, and this... the vocals, the guitar tone, the shirts... ack. Puke

the rip chords were cool in their day, however listening to their new stuff, it's plain to me that they have lost their touch. the vocal stuff sounds more like classic rock than vocal surf to me. their use of thin strings is obvious as well.

The Wikipedia entry for surf music LINK makes an interesting distinction between "surf rock" and "surf pop". I wholeheartedly agree with that classification. It helps prevent any hard feelings toward groups like these.

I know Mitch Schecter is a member here; perhaps he would like to contribute something to this thread??

anyway, I knew the reaction by some would be along these lines, but posted this nonetheless for those that are into this sort of thing, and not just instro surf; I expected that this is surely not everyone's cup of tea/"surf"

it did sound pretty cool listening to this a few weeks ago as I drove around Rancho Palos Verdes and was looking down at the Pacific Ocean!!

anyway....for those that dig it, check it out

p.s. the RIP CHORDS played a SURF-ROCK SHINDIG last year at OTTO's...and I gotta tell ya', they ripped up the place and had the crowd goin' nutz! We worked together on a SURFIN' SAFARI show I did at THE CUTTING ROOM -- same result!! I even got a chance to be on stage singing 'Barbara Ann'...way too much fun.

Well....
Regardless of how everyone feels in here,I have to say that I hold no bad feelings toward all of you purests. We have a great time recording and playing live shows, and we really felt the good vibes when we played for Unsteady Freddie at Otto's and The Cutting Room last year for a bunch of "Twang Shebang" friends in attendance.
But, I understand that alot of you good people in here look down on us as an "Oldies" act....and that's ok,because there are twice as many people out there who enjoy our brand of music.
I love the pure Surf Guitar music....I listen to it all the time....but I also listen to The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Yes, Rush, The Kinks..etc. There is room in all of your lives for a little diversity.....so...Ok...you don't have to listen ....you don't have to like it....I understand. But, when I'm on the road playing and meeting Thousands of people who are having a great time, and are happy that we played for them, it makes it ok that you all react the way you all do.
And by the way....I use Ernie Ball Light Top...Heavy Bottom strings 10 to 52...so the poster above was almost right. And that "Alternate Album Cover" that was posted above....I loved that!
I hope you all have a great summer...I will.

speaking of that alternative cover,

what the heck is a STUFFPARTY anyway?

sounds kinda weird....

and this sure doesn't explain much:

p.s. Mitch, thanks for your comments; I have no shame in admitting I dig the music on that album

Hi Mitch, we are not all purists here but since the site is Surf Guitar 101 there is an absolute bias towards instro and it the only place we can go and not be considered geeks.

i really respect that kind of reaction, even with the harsh words you received. everybody's a critic, and it's nice to see you're still looking up and ahead.

for what it's worth, the RIP CHORDS' live sets are peppered with instrumental surf (that's right, no vocals) -- both new originals, and covers -- and the new CD has a few instrumental surf tracks as well

zak
but you guys seriously need help in the artistic design department.

I don't think so since that type of cover is spot on for their target audience. A cool looking cover would only make them sell less CDs.

How is this current Rip Chords related to the sixties band? Did any of the current members perform with the original band? Just wondering...

I don't know anything about the current version but the 60's Rip Chords had Bruce and Terry recording the albums with studio musicians while the real band was sent out on tour. So what you hear on most of their records isn't the original members.

T H E ✠ S U R F I T E S

I think Rich Rotkin is from the original touring band and one of the other originals plays some of the time. But, as far as the hit records go, it was all Bruce and Terry. But hey, we all can't be Bruce and Terry...or even close. If I was in a band that had some major hits back then, I'd be trying to keep it going, like these guys are, I can't lie. And , if I was someone like Mitch Schecter and had the chance to make a living playing guitar with them, even though I wasn't in the original band, I'd probably do it too.
A lot of us have a totally different point of view playing subculture music to a subculture audience and the occasional innocent bystanders (for very little money), but it gives us the freedom to do whatever we want, without worrying about supporting a band, crew, and their families.
Klas is right, when my mom and dad want to hear "Hey Little Cobra" at a state fair or something, this wardrobe makes total sense to them, even though neither they or the band wore aloha shirts back in the 60s.
It is what it is...
