Permalink Anyone ever use a Gibson Firebird for Surf?

New Topic

I've never owned a Firebird, never even played one, and never really given them much thought, but I recently dreamed I had a white reverse Firebird and was playing surf music on it.

Maybe my Italia Modena had something to do with that, as I think it has always kinda reminded me of a non-reverse Firebird. Come to think of it, it does resemble a Jag/Jazzmaster body style a lot too.

Wonder how those triple Gibson baby humbuckers would do for Surf?

Hey Matt, wake up from that nightmare and watch the Penetrators' "Declassified" video again.......It will help you feel a LOT better........ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

The Estwood Stormbird bears resemblance to the Firebird, it has the P-90s, it's just missing the whammy

Mr. Mogwai

A non-reverse with p-90s is a guitar I'd love to own, but I still wouldn't play it for surf.

but if it sounds good, why not?

Mr. Mogwai

Because it wouldn't get the ideal surf tones. Sounding good is irrelevant of surf.

Perhaps. I don't even know what it means. I guess I was trying to say that surf isn't the alpha and the omega.

I thought you were describing the 'Verb. LMAO

The description of the 'Verb normally involves a synonym of feces.

Agent Orange?...Fifty Foot Combo?

I think it would sound great!

I use a gretsch for my surf stuff. I like it better at the moment for surf stuff.

CHECK IT OUT!!!

I love Firebirds I had the chance to jam on a few 60s models a few years back and I would love to get one and yes I would bust it out for surf and why not? 2 pickups= some kind of twang am I right or am I right.

I'm not to hot on the 3 pickup models but 2 pickup model now we're talking Rock

Saw Rick Miller of Southern Culture rip thru "Meximelt" and a Link Wray medley playing a Firebird. It had one mini bucker in the bridge position (Firebird I)?, and metallic green paint job. It was a perfect slightly overdriven surf tone with mucho reverbo.

I play the cheapo Epiphone Mandobird VIII mandolin. it is definitely a mini-surf machine.

you might also consider a modified Gibson Victory...very "Firebird-ish". I owned the Victory Bass, and it definitely surfs well. I think if you modified the Victory guitar (slightly) by adding coil taps or single coil pickups and a Bigsby, you'd have a monster surf machine.

This is one of my "guitars I really don't need, in fact I already have more than I need" infatuations. 52 hot rod tele with mini-bucker in the neck... If things were better out there I would sell/trade some gear to get one, but my chandlers are underappreciated in normal times. Right now? Haimage Kiss

Back in the '60'2 I used my Gretsch Tenneseean w/Hilotrons for surf. Very clear singlecoil p/us and a Bigsby. Worked great!

My DiPinto Belvedere Deluxe w/DiMarzio Hot Minihumbuckers (with a series/parallel switch for each) can sound very Telecasterish, like for "Buckaroo." So I would think that the even brighter sound of Firebird pickups would be useful, but you want a two pickup guitar, unless you do some rewiring. Need the bridge and neck combination for the "chime." Minihumbuckers are the most versatile pickups IMHO.
