Permalink The Definitive Surf Compilation?

New Topic

What CD (or set) would you recommend as the definitive Surf Music compilation?
I've already obtained all four volumes of The Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar which I knew would skip over the major hits and delve into the rarities. While that's interesting, I really need to be educated in the "standards", if you will, of surf guitar.
After 36 years of playing rock guitar, I've returned to my roots. I can trace the root of my interest in guitar (and music in general) to the day I heard my cousin playing Wipeout on a blue Sekova solidbody through a blackface Princeton Reverb with the treble and reverb cranked! But I digress....
Even though Surf music was what sparked my interest, I kind of ignored it for all these years, and have only recently rediscovered it. Up until a couple years ago, all I knew of Surf was Wipeout, Pipeline and Walk, Don't Run. I didn't even know Mr. Moto 'til a few months ago. So, as you can see, I'm a relatively recent convert to the genre. I'm just looking to fill in the gaping holes in my knowledge of Surf Music.

Thanks for your indulgence and I look forward to your suggestions.
Eric

Here is a good thread with a lot of great recommendations: Check it out . . .

Actually, I think this one may be more helpful?

Thanks, webbed one. After reading the threads I think I'll be looking for the Guitar Player and Cowabunga comps.

Eric

The Rhino/Guitar Player Surf comp was my first real introduction to this music. Unfortunately, I don't think it's in print any longer and so is a little pricey now, but it is available. I haven't sprung for the Cowabunga box yet either, but it looks like a good one.

The good news is, as I am sure you are finding out now, there are TONS of great vintage surf music from the 60s now being released again on CD.

Good luck!

Ace UK "The Birth of Surf" and "Toes on the Nose" are pretty good.james

You know, my dad gave me one of the starbucks comps saying "this is like giving ice to an eskimo" and though I've never listened to it, all the big ones are definitely on there

you should at least listen to the last few tunes on this disc.....

Toes on the Nose is essential 1W material. Also the Cowabunga box set...

I bought the starbucks comp. Good stuff, it stays in the car, like a cops backup gun, hahaha. Remember, it is better to have surf and not need it than to need surf and not have it.

I was just thinking today that we should all make a best of surf comp, and
and have a bunch with us all the time, when the subject of surf comes up, just hand the person the cd, and say this is surf,
listen, learn, copy it, and pass it on.

talk about spreading the gospel.

Just picked up the Starbucks Big Waves CD on eBay. Wow! The last few songs blew me away. The Mermen, Laika & The Cosmonauts, The Aqua Velvets, The Vanduras ... Great Stuff!

Where have I been for the last few years? I feel like Rip Van Winkle waking up to a brand new world. I'm really loving discovering this "Third Wave" stuff. Great fun!

Guess the best has to be the 4 cd set from Rhino. "Cowabunga The Rhino Surf Box" Sadly, it's out of print and the set now commands $100 or better. Rhino needs to re-release this one...

www.northofmalibu.com

the Rhino Records compilation cd (R270724):

Guitar Player Presents LEGENDS OF GUITAR- SURF, VOL. 1

an awesome collection on a single disc.

do search for it on the ebay, or used on Amazon...it is pricey, but still worth every penny. It is the Holy Grail of surf CD compilations. A true gem. (you can also find it on cassette...and I hear tell of an LP version to boot!)

The Cowabunga Surf Box is very very good: but, unfortunately also very very pricey these days.

The Starbucks Surf CD is quite good: a very nice intro to the whole Surf/Instrumental genre...still available at the nice-price, too...
